Update - Kna-nt100 install

I decide to add the Kenwood KNA-NT100 Navteq Traffic Receiver to the radio. Nothing too complicate but I thought I'd point out one problem I had.

I originally thought I'd do basically the same thing I did with the iPod cable. Install a normal USB cable on the radio and then use an adapter to connect the USB A male plug on the extension cable to the the Traffic Receivers Mini USB male cable. I would put this under the center console power port for easy access. By doing it this way, I could easyily unplug the traffic cable and plug a laptop into the back of the Garmin to install new icons, languages, maps etc. I wouldn't have to remove the radio to access the USB port.

This setup didn't work. Although my adapters worked fine with normal USB devices, the Navteq receiver must use all five USB pins or some other odd setup. I even tried adapters from different suppliers.

As a work around, however, I removed the center speaker mounting hardware so now I can get my hand back behind the radio without pulling it to access the USB port.

This thread helped me out a bunch, so I thought I'd add a few comments for someone else that tackles this install.

I put in a Alpine INA-910W. Very nice so far although it lacks bluetooth audio streaming, something I used occasionally. No idea why alpine would leave that out of their top deck.

So my comments after the install
1. The OP removed his center speaker and mentions that it wouldn't be used, but with the TATO hooked up, sound does still come out of this speaker. In fact, it really raises up the sound stage and I'd miss it if it were gone. I needed to tone down the treble quite a bit though.

2. The urban runner trim ring looks good but on my set up it was far from plug and play. There is nothing for it to clip into. I assume the urban runner radio has some places that this thing grabs onto?? I'm not sure how the OP mounted his, but on mine I had to modify it quite a bit before it would sit flush at the bottom and then I had to use a few spots of plastic epoxy to hold it in place. I'm pleased with the end result but that was the most time consuming part of the whole job.

3. I used a PAC TR7 bypass for the foot brake and hand brake lines on my alpine. This module can be used to bypass the foot/hand brake wires on mosts decks and I recommend it. Not that I condone watching videos while you are driving, but the Alpine requirements for watching a video are a bit over the top and if nothing else this makes for an easier install since you don't have to hunt down these wires.

4. The top of the Alpine protrudes more than I'd prefer. To fix this I'd have to modify the stock mounting brackets. And I'm not convinced there is clearance in the dash cutout to change the angle much more than it is. This is getting a bit picky, it looks good as is, just if I wanted it "perfect" I'd have to do some more work, which might include cutting inside the dash. There is a large metal support back there which might make this impossible (or stupid).

The urban runner ring just snaps into place. Your ring should have had some metal clips on it. This thread has some photos that show the back. It's the last thing that you install. Not that it looks bad but the top edges of your trim ring looks like they are sticking out slightly, could there be something behind there keeping it from from snapping in place?

it's just open space between my radio and the outer trim. There is nothing for the clips to clip into. I'd take a pic, but like I said, I had to epoxy it in place. Strange.... could you possibly unsnap yours and take a pic?

Also wanted to remind people to check the dip switches on the TATO before installation. I normally listen to talk radio so I've never had any volume issues but last night the wife wanted to crank up some music. Full volume was loud but not LOUD. That's when I realized that I never checked the dip setting on the TATO to make sure they were set to the factory recommended- 1-3 ON 4-8 OFF.

I pulled the radio, set the TATO dip switches to the right settings and now the wife can rock out. I also connected the factory radio up temporarily and got that forgotten CD out of it.

I have the TATO harness and dip switches set the same but my system still doesn't get loud enough for me. My Eclipse AVN has 5v pre-outs so I don't think its the head unit.

Did you turn off "Surround" on your JBL deck before removing it? I left the surround enabled and kept the center channel connected as well.

My Alpine has 4V preouts and it gets loud enough for me with all dip switches 1-3 on. I've never been to max volume, I'll put it that way. I'm not sure if surround was set on/off before I pulled the stock radio. I did turn the volume all the way up on the stock head before I removed it.

I may have to tear into the dash again and mess with the stock headunit. I did turn the volume to 50 before removing the stock HU. I remember the TATO instructions said 40 or 45 so I did 50 thinking for good measure but was worried about distortion if I turned it up any higher.

If I end up going that far I'm also going to experiment turning surround mode off. Part of the reason is with the AVN navigation it provides turn by turn directions to the front left speaker, but the JBL amp does weird things and splits the voice guidance between the front left and center channel. My other hope is that the amp will provide a bit more power to the door speakers but that remains to be seen.

I looked into the Urban Runner trim myself when I was planning my install. The problem your having with the trim ring is it only fits the SR5- non RDS JBL center dash. (The 4Runner has 2 different center dash /console designs) Since you have the Limited / JBL w RDS dash it doesn't fit correctly.

I'd recommend the dash kit in this thread, it will work properly with your limited and is the best looking option outside of the Urban Runner trim IMO.

I looked into the Urban Runner trim myself when I was planning my install. The problem your having with the trim ring is it only fits the SR5- non RDS JBL center dash. (The 4Runner has 2 different center dash /console designs) Since you have the Limited / JBL w RDS dash it doesn't fit correctly.

Thanks for this update. I'll edit the first post to include this information. It's a pricey piece of plastic and even more so if it doesn't fit.

great thread...couple questions...how long did it take you guys on average to install?

My double din sony is coming in today but i have to wait another week for the sirius add on to come in. Should i wait to do it all at once or is it easy to take everything apart and add it in later?

Once you get used to taking about the dash, you can access the radio in about 5 - 10 minutes.

The install time would vary. Since I had the Tato, I only had to do power and ground. The speakers were pre-wired. It was all basically plug and play (and some wiring I did in advance). If this is the first time you've taken apart the dash, I'd give yourself a at least three hours so you don't have to rush anything. Nothing was difficult though.

Don't forget to eject your CDs from the factory radio and keep a towel in the car so you can set the face of the radio on it while you're working on the back side.

i had mine installed 'professionally' at a local car stereo shop.

Everything works except my wheel control for 'rewind/reverse'. also, when listening to bluetooth from iphone, the wheel control for reverse/forward buttons don't do a thing.
i'm using a kenwood ddx418 stereo, pac wheel adapter. i have the jbl factory system.
I called them, they just said thats the way it is, sorry.:gun5:
