I just got off the phone with Garmin. I ahve been investigating the Kenwood/Garmin nav radios. They say that these units Nav is based on their street pilots. She also said there is not a big difference in reliability between the "hidden" Kenwood nav unit and the 7100's integrated setup.
I asked specifically if I could load a Topo map onto an SD card and have the unit read it. She said the 7100 will read the topo map but wont give as much detail as units like the 478 would. She did verify that we could see all of the elevation information, all of the trails and some of the creeks and lakes (the larger ones). She also verified that doing so would not harm or change the street maps, because you go in and select which map you want to use. So we could go off-road, select the topo, do our off-road trip. The when we return to the street on the way home, switch back to the street map. She also verified that it would display XM Weather info, if we bought that subscription from XM.
Sounds like a great solution! Just thought anyone looking at this unit would like to hear this.
