Key Fob Not working or programming (FIXED)

This is for anyone else that may be chasing a rabbit like I was here recently. My Key Fobs suddenly stopped working one day and I tried everything.Reprogramming, tested batteries in the Fob, check fuses I assumed were associated with the Key fob or doors locking/unlocking. Come to find out, of all things, it was a blown fuse in the "Dome Light" slot under the hood. Replaced with a 10A fuse and suddenly the key fob debacle was solved.

This may already be known by most but as a new owner of a 4th gen and in case someone is in my shoes again, I hope they find this.

I had the same problem when I bought my 4Runner. Fuse kept blowing, taking out the door lock, clock, trip odometer, and interior lighting.

The step lighting is also on that circuit. It turns out I had a shorted wire at one of the sockets. Make sure that if you're having a repeated fuse blowout, that you're not experiencing a short somewhere. Don't just throw in higher amp fuses.

My issue was due to deleting the step rails and their lighting. I put in the same fuse that the the Dome light fuse called for.

This worked for me

I checked the dome light fuse and the security fuse. Both had not been blown. I tried my key fob again and it started working. This was an easy fix.

The tiny edges on the clips that hold the battery in place inside the fob are easy to break off or wear down with repeated battery replacement and it's not easy to see! This causes at least intermittent issues with the all the buttons on the remote and the communication between the fob and the vehicle ignition. This happened on both of my remotes for my 2018. The battery holder itself is easily removable, but I couldn't find any such part on the internet after hours of searching. I ended up purchasing two remotes on e-bay for $44 and removed the battery holders - replacing the worn/broken holders in the original remotes and voila! Saved myself about $600........

Key bob issuse

I'm having an issue with my key fob, it will unlock but not lock my doors. I tried to program it and I get all the way to programming mode hold the lock and unlock for 1.5 seconds, then as soon as I press unlock to hold it for 2 seconds it cycles through the lock unlock sequence twice signifying it failed to program. Then I am left in the same situation where I can unlock but not lock.

This issue is happening with my 2005 4.7L 4runner. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I believe you're doing the last step incorrectly, according to what I have read the last steps is holding the LOCK button not the UNLOCK button.

Here's a link to the instructions some other members have posted on the forums...hopefully it will work for you this time, FYI it's worth trying numerous times because it only take a small mistake or too little or to much time in between steps for it to fail, let us know if you succeed or not!!

I believe you're doing the last step incorrectly, according to what I have read the last steps is holding the LOCK button not the UNLOCK button.

Here's a link to the instructions some other members have posted on the forums...hopefully it will work for you this time, FYI it's worth trying numerous times because it only take a small mistake or too little or to much time in between steps for it to fail, let us know if you succeed or not!!

That was a typo on the last step, I meant to type lock and when I realized tried to edit the comment but it wouldn't let me save the changes. I've gone through all of the steps 3 times and still no luck. I'm going to order a new key fob and see if that fixes it.

Hoping you'll respond as I'm getting this exact issue now and a search brought me to your post. Looks like the DOME fuse is shared with other electrical components like interior lights, radio, etc.. With a blown DOME fuse, did you notice those shared components out as well?

BTW, I'm referencing this fuse diagram. Mine is a 2000. Fuse Box Diagram Toyota 4Runner (N180; 1995-2002)
