Just purchased a '21 limited and ordered a third key for it.Does the dealer have to program the vehicle to accept it or can I use something like carista.

Aftermarket companies may be able to do it. I would ask if that is really the route you want to take. The program process with techstream is cake. The dealer should only charge you for like a half hour as long as it is OEM key. I will tell you we have seen aftermarket key issues trying to program them and sometimes they flat out don’t work.

So from what I understand the 2021 keys have to be ordered from toyota I just didn't know if the dealer has to program the vehicle .

I assume you're talking about a smart key which has a "laser cut key," the programming process is similar to the non-smart key and is done easily enough via the Techstream Scantool. Otheriwise it's nice to get them from the dealer because they can VIN cut them.

That being said, I think most quality locksmiths these days can do key programming if you call and ask.

Dealer shouldn't charge too much to program it if you provide the key since it's just labour; should be around or less than .5-1hr of labor (depends on how they set their flat-rate programming fees.) You might even be able to sweet talk them to do it for free if you just recently purchased the vehicle, I mean it never hurts to ask?
