welli needed a duplicate key to start my runner. I bought a key from toyta a blank cause I get a decent discount because of the amout of vehicles I have bought from them. so I just bought it this am. and then Toyota said the guy who cuts them had left and to go to lowes to have it cut to open the door and program it later. so long story short.... it wont even open the door...:wtf: so I guess im out a key as lowes says they wont do anything cause they weren't even supposed to cut it. done ranting thank you

Yeah that sucks, although you may still be in luck. Take it to a locksmith!!! They know better on how to cut keys correctly, whether it be a shoulder stop or tip stop, and they know how to properly calibrate their machines. It's possible your key may be salvageable and any locksmith can tell you if it is or not.

Call AAA and ask who they use for their local locksmith, usually you can trust whoever they steer you toward, because let's face it most locksmith are shady!

I would just have a dealer cut you a key based on the VIN, its a bit pricey (I think we charge $30 for a chipped key) but its factory fresh and they don't need your old key; just proof of ownership, ID, and stuff.

I don't know if Locksmiths can cut based on VIN, but its worth asking.

Yes most locksmith have the ability to cut new keys it's not by vin but either way it's fresh cuts not a copy. I say go to a locksmith cause they might be able to fix the problem, it could be something as simple as wrong depth on all cuts. Either way dealership or locksmith, not a place the sells fertilizer for your lawn....

Question, do you have AAA?
Cause if you do just call them and they will pay part of the cost to cut a new key and program all in the comfort of your own driveway.

Edit: I take that back....most Ace hardware stores have some competent key guys

thanks for all the info guys so after I posted I ended up sacking up and going into the garage with some jewlers files and good magnification glass and took my time comparing keys fixing the minor differences and with a little patienc (the hardest part since im young) and was able to first get the key to open the door and then was able to program the key into the anti theft via service bulliten 32 bucks total for a new master key cause lowes didn't charge me to copy the key now back to watch my chargers!
