key question [startup issue]

about a month ago, the valet at my hotel lost my keys. They had a locksmith make a new one, and everything's been fine.

today I went to run an errand, and grabbed my wife's key. the truck would crank and crank but not start. (it did start once, but died immediately).

took my wife's car instead, and when I got back, I tried to start the 4runner with my key. it started right up.

tried it again with the other key, no luck.

Does the OE key have a chip or something, and did the rekey somehow nullify my wife's key?

Correct. You need to have both keys when programming. Take it back and ask them to fix

The old key (his only key) must of been there, else the remote would not have worked.

But agree, go back and have whomever program the new key to look at this issue.

You do not need all the keys to be present when simply adding a new key.
I have added plenty of keys without ever deleting the current ones.

However if you told the locksmith one of them was lost, they probably did the responsible thing and deleted all the keys, then added just the one you bought from him. You can take your wife's key back and they can add it in about 5 minutes.
