Key question...

When I got my '02, it only came with one key and one remote. The key does not look OEM to me--looks like the previous owner had it cut at the hardware store... It's an Ilco key. I've included a couple of pictures. Question is, I want to get another key made so I have a spare in case I lose this one:nerd:. Is this key chipped so the ignition won't start without it? Or, did the 2002's not have chips in the keys? It's hard to imagine that this key has an immobilizer inside of it...

Looks chipped to me. The key has a chip, not an immobilizer. The ignition and immobilizer brain do the talking.

If your 4runner has the immobilizer, you need the chipped key to start it. I think only 3 keys can be coded into the immobilizer brain at one time. Might only be 2. I think there are instructions online for adding another master key.

Key is NOT chipped.
I had a Tacoma that had the same Ilco cut key. Just an after market brand of key.

The "Chipped" keys look like these.
I just went thru this with my buddies father in law.

Just a side note. Nice color of granite countertop!!

OK, so I should just be able to go to Home Depot or Lowes and have a new key cut without issue, right? I guess if it doesn't work I've only blown a couple of bucks, so no biggie... :thanks:

Aftermarket chipped keys are available. I have one. The only way to know for sure is to take it somewhere and have them "test" it. They basically pass it through a device that attempts to communicate with the key.

If your key works now (have to assume it does), then a Home Depot cut key (non-chipped) will also work.

x2 your key is NOT chipped. That's one of the differences between SR5 and Limited models.

SR5 = normal key (cheap), Limited = Chipped key (expensive).

Depends on your POV. Having a chipped key means a little better security.

Well, I've had 2 Limiteds and one SR5, and looked at a bunch of them, so I think that's correct. May be an option on the SR5, dunno.
