Key won’t completely turn to “Lock”

Hi, couldn’t find this specific problem so...
Sporadically, & not relative to anything consistent, my key will only turn off as far as the “ACC” point on ignition switch. If I disconnect the battery, I can then turn off all the way & pull out the key. I replaced the ignition switch (just the tumblers), but the problem remains. I assume it’s something electric relative to steering wheel lock or otherwise? Any advice appreciated. Thanks

I am currently having the same issue. I believe the problem is with the sensor that detects that you are in park. It is to prevent you from turning the car off all the way when not in park. So, somewhere along the line, there is likely a loose connection. I am getting around it by shifting into park very slowly and that is working well enough until the problem gets worse or I get time to tear things apart.

It needs to be in park to be able to go to off :cowboy:

He's right. It's the shift interlock solenoid that's going out on you.

Wow- that makes so much sense. Not sure if it’s coincidental or not, but I was able to operate the key correctly after I unplugged the 2 wire connection to to the ignition switch. I assumed this was an off/on circuit that made the “ding” go off when the key would be left in ignition & door was open. No idea why this would affect operation, but it did tonight & I'm going to drive it awhile & see if the sporadic problem returns. If so, will direct attention to park sensor & see if there’s a problem there before pulling trigger on new ignition assembly. FWIW, I did try that previously (shifting into park a variety of ways & wiggling it once in position), but it never affected the problem. Just comes & goes mysteriously. Thanks for input!

you also might try this... I have exactly the same problem and this is how I got around it.

Great vid- that’s the problem w mine. It worked by disengaging the 2 wires to ignition that are separate from the 7 wire harness (on my 02), but it triggers engine check light as well. Disengaging the solenoid did it. Thanks!
