Keyless/alarm/remote start ?

2000 Limited. Factory remote works at best 25 feet away. What is the best option to replace it with aftermarket? Looking at compustart but want to do it myself. Why pay for some monkey to do the same wire strip back or scotchlok connection I could do myself, right?


So what works best, and for the best price?

I got the Viper 5906v installed a few days ago and it is probably the best alarm on the market. The auto start works real good and I have tested it up to a half mile away and it starts right up. Just set your heater to a comfortable setting and fire it up while you're making your morning coffee. Also has the option for the smart start app which allows you to start your car from anywhere you have cell service. It was a little on the expensive side at $680 installed but financing is available at most shops.

I went with Compustar since Id read some negative reviews about Viper. The remote start is definitely worth it on those cold SLC mornings. Just had to dial in the sensitivity as it kept going off for rice rockets. I paid some guy $80 to install it for me. Could have done it myself but I didn't have the electrical experience or time. Make sure whichever system you get works for the rear hatch as well.

Anyone do it themselves? Have a link to a parts list? 700 bucks for a 6k dollar car is not realistic for me. My car is only 100 ft away from me when inside my house at the furthest point. Was hoping to be able to integrate the factory's alarm and just basically add remote start and the keyless entry.

Looking into this myself, seems my keyless remote system is going whacky. Based on this thread I started looking into the Compustar system and it looks like you could buy everything for less than $200 on eBay.

Might be able to go cheaper with different remotes too. Just a matter of installing it yourself.

Would not recommend DIY, especially for an 00 limited with a transponder key. I have considerable professional experience as a remote start installer and my 01 limited was one of the most complicated I've done.

You're going to need a proper transponder bypass/integration module which will generally require you to have access to programming software and tools that only authorized installers have access to.

This is also true just for using Compustar. To properly program it, you'll want the op-500 programmer.

What's the need for the alarm? Alarms are kinda useless outside of the blinky red light, which you should already have in a limited. And I'm pretty sure the factory alarm can still operate with the compustar if it's installed correctly.

If you go without the alarm, you can find something installed, with a warranty, for 200-300.

Realistic my goal is to just add a keyless entry that works passed the 25ft mark. I did my research it's not any harder to do than any other Asian car. Just needs a bypass module and you lose the key. I doubt any of the shops that are still in business have anything above an obd scan tool anyway. Any good shop is not within 40 miles of me and I live next to NYC.

Would there be interest in a plug-in kit?

Hey guys, you should really look at Excalibur. Yes, I'm a little biased since I design them but objectively, they are as good or better quality than viper or compustar with better features, better warranty, and better pricing. We're just not so great at marketing.

The AL-1775-3DB really can't be beat. I just used it as the foundation to build an almost complete plug in for JK Wranglers. I have it on all my cars and, if the other brands were better, I could have installed them for free as well being in the industry. Oh and it works on stick shifts too.

I just started looking at designing a plug in kit for 3rd Gens mostly because I'm spoiled now. Though I'd have to produce a few hundred to make it realistic and I'm not sure how much interest there would be from the community. The plug in system would be adaptable to other brands as well.

BTW, DIY is 100% realistic. I've been designing/installing these things for 20 years and specialize in DIY install guides on my personal site. Have had plenty of first timers with great success. If you know your way around crimpers/wiring and have patience, it's a 4 hour job tops. If you only want remote start, can probably get it done in under 2hrs.

And, I'm not trying to do a sales pitch here, just offering some experience and perspective.

I'm a big fan of compustar products. I've installed them on 3 of my previous vehicles, no problems at all. On the other hand my mother just got a viper professionally installed and it acts up. That will be back in the shop soon. I would have put a compustar in for her but my dad wanted it done asap.
