Keyless entry not working

My keyless entry has been crapping out on me lately. I seriously have to hit the button about 10-15 times to lock and unlock my 4runner. It doesn't matter if I'm 30 feet away or 3 inches from my truck.

I was wondering if maybe I just have to replace a battery in the unit or something, or do I need to get another one?

My 4runner is a 99 by the way.

Ah...I got the same problem with both of my keyless entries. Sometimes, no matter how many times you try, the doors are not locked or opened. Try this next time it happens : stand next the the door and point your keyless entry up to the sky. Somehow it works on mine. check this thread out

I got mined used and it only came with one remote. It pretty much happens to me everywhere, home, work, doesn't really matter.

But of course, when I left for work this morning, the doors unlocked on the first try.

For the most part, I have to battle with it though.

Thanks for the info linhsy. I'll have to try the pointing up thing.

I've been meaning to pick up another one on ebay anyways, but am I going to have the same problem with it?

I got a new battery for mine and it continues to not work. The toyota dealer in my town said it could be problems with the wiring in the car. Just a thought. But of course taking that in to get checked and possibly fixed isn't free. So if the new battery doesn't work this could be why.

for max range face the car and hold the remote at middle chest

mine works great, fails only when I am near TV/FM transmitter sites within a half mile of the tall antenna

there was a story last year of a whole town having trouble with all makes of keyless entry - some kind of government facility making RF interference in the 300 mhz band

the most common problem besides battery is the etched contacts on the circuit board where the flexible button makes contact when you push the button

use a pencil eraser on the rubber side and the circuit board side to clean them up and you are good for another two years

remote key

I'm new to this forum so couldn't post a new thread so I'm jumping in on this related thread - hope I don't piss off too many folks.

Toyota started making a keyless remote entry key (combined the keyless remote fob with the key) in I think 2009. My question to the forum is does anyone know if I can buy one of these 'remote entry keys' for my 2004 anywhere?

Thanks,
Steve

There's a thread on this somewhere. An Ebay 5th gen key (fob+key in one) but the battery kept dying because it wasn't OEM. Pretty much all of those adopters just threw it away.

There's another more recent thread of another user who bought an Ebay key blade (fob + retractable key blade), but we're all waiting to see how it turns out.

A lot of info and ideas if you search. With how old these 4th gen's are, someone has tried or thought of it before hand.

Sorry to threadjack an old thread but my issue seems related.

My keyless remote works fine to unlock the door. In fact, I can unlock the door, roll down the back window, re-lock it etc. etc.

However, after driving the car for a few minutes it seems to stop working. Whenever I park after having driven the car, the keyless remote does not work any longer. After a few minutes it starts working again.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this and how to fix it. It is infuriating to park and then have to wait a few minutes to arm the alarm.

Turns out the replacement battery was a dud. Not sure what was going on but a second fresh battery fixed the issue.

Key fob issues

So I am having the same issue and the light bulb in my head went out and I realized I didn't have any issues until I swapped out my dome lights with leds being that the rke system controls my dome lights I waited for them to go out and bag doors locked first shot now I just need to figure out how to block the interface so my fob can communicate better did a little research and some people have had good luck with farite chokes at least for fm interface but im not sure if our fobs use am or fm

I thought new batteries I bought are duds, but turns out Duracell put a child-repellent bitter coating on them. Cleaning them with alcohol helped, but still have the problem

I don't think it's the keypad etching issue either, because this is happening even with the spare key that have used only a few times.

Key+Fob is annoying

I bought the Key+Fob-in-one and had zero problems programming it. Works great. Until I started using it. It is very easy to press one of the buttons when you are turning the key to start the vehicle. Very annoying. I went back to the original Fob after a week.

I would check battery first as it the simplest and less expensive.

Just bought a 02' that didn't have a fob. I contacted dealer w/ VIN # and got part and bought a refurbished fod. Programming was simple and straight forward.

I would try both of these before going after wiring. I assume all actuators work and you can use the door switch fine with no issues.
