Recently purchased a 1998 4Runner Limited with no FOB and wanted to know if the security system only works or is activated using a FOB. The reason I ask is because just by locking the doors manually it does not set the alarm-unless there is something wrong with the system. My 4Runner does have factory installed key less entry with the security system. I ordered a FOB from a place called keylessremotesonline.com

By the way do not order from these people-Poor communication for starters. They never sent my FOB and so far have not credited my charge card? Just a warning if anyone out there is looking for one. What is wrong with these internet businesses anyway?:dammit:

Why are you capitalizing fob? Fob is a word, not an acronym.

Anyway, as long as the doors are locked and shut, the system should be armed. To test this, just lock everything up but leave the drivers window down. After a couple minutes, reach in and unlock the door. The alarm should go off. That's how it is on my '99 anyway.

It's one way to get your attention-Thanks for that advice-I tried that and it did not work-but I did not wait 2 minutes. If it does not work after your suggested time what could be the problem with the alarm? I know that's probably not an easy answer! Thanks!

Call your dealership, give them your VIN and they'll tell you if you have it or not.

My '98 SR5 came equipped with the Toyota VIP RS3000 security system. It was installed under my drivers seat, so you may want to look there to see if you have the same system.

There is a passive arm option on the RS3000 meaning you don't need to remote to arm and disarm the alarm. However, you still have to manually lock the doors using your key.

Thanks for your response-I do have the security system under my seat, just not sure which kind. So my system should be activated by using the key in the door?
 
The passive arm option is something you'll have to configure on the system. I assume you have the RS3000, so read this.

Here's a few notes from the link about passive arming...

The RS3000 may be programmed to automatically ARM itself 15 seconds after the ignition key is turned off and removed, the vehicle is exited, and the last point of entry (door, trunk or hatch) is closed.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The vehicle's doors are not locked automatically by the RS3000 during the PASSIVE ARMING process; please remember to lock your vehicle's doors by key, or manually, when you do not use the REMOTE CONTROL.
 
To the left of the steering wheel, is there a little sensor with an led light? Sure sign that you do have an alarm. BTW, you can get these fobs for cheap on eBay. OEM with instructions on how to program it.

I have the sticker on the drivers door window indicating it's a VIP Intrusion Security system-I just have not checked it out. Thanks for the info!

I recently checked and it's an RS3000 VIP Intrusion System. I just need to get a hold of a remote and go through the setup procedure to get the system activated.
 
If you read the manual, there is actually a way to activate the alarm without the remote. You might want to do this to protect your rig before the remote comes.
 
My 98 came with a manual for the rs3000 alarm. Don't think it ws in the main manual. But honestly, that alarm is not the greatest. It does have a glass break sensor, but 99% of thieves just Jimmy the lock anyway. It's better than nothing, but I only found the lock/unlock feature the most useful thing. I think you can set it so the doors lock at a certain speed and unlock when you turn off the engine.
 
The link that kcyota provided is a copy of the manual for the alarm and it will give you step-by-step directions to use the alarm passively.
 
alarms are pretty useless anyways. I could care less if my 4runner has an alarm on it or not. I enjoy the keyless entry though. If you have full coverage insurance, dont sweat it.
