Kick ass diesel 2nd gen

I've never understood why people complain about how slow the diesel would be compared to the 3.whatever, the reason why you would buy a diesel 4runner is to get better gas mileage to take longer trips. I would totally do that to my 99 4runner, that will be a modification I will gladly spend $15k-20K:surfer:

People buy 4Runners for gas mileage? You'll realize how bad these are when you try to pass a Geo.

I vote for the the baby Cummins also. As long as it's not too tall for the engine bay.

Diesel is awesome. If it has some balls. And they are better for water crossing

Overpriced IMO - Be like importing a old Bentley from the UK / with the steering wheel, on the wrong side...PITA.

It's not just that its slow, but the redline is so low you have to shift constantly in traffic and on uneven terrain. The rev limiter is aggressive and torque takes forever to come back if you hit it. Left-handed would be even worse. I've driven that motor in a HiLux in Brazil. NO THANK YOU.

meh... 1992 year models are able to be imported now, youll start seeing a lot of these. there is a shop here in dallas that imports lots of older japanese "tuner" cars. i guess they realized how badly people wanted 4runners because they bring a couple over every few months. they have a 1991 in right now, 4x4 diesel auto with 135k, listed at $7500

Best recommendation so far. The vibrations from a 4BT would fatigue the thin steel of a 3rd gen frame really quick. This platform deserves a little more refinement than that.

The low end torque isn't spectacular on these older Toyota diesels and frankly if I was after the best water crossing abilities I would have a boat instead of a 4Runner.

I can only imagine the price of a brand new baby Cummins. Considering how much a used 3.9/4BT or 5.9/6BTA is.

I had no idea they where gonna sell them new. About time. 50% larger then my 1.9L TDI, 40% more torque, and 70% more HP. Wonder how big of a price tag that's gonna come with?

I used to drive a hilux LN 106 4x4 with 2.8 diesel in Sri Lanka. Still with my parents and for the past 15 years, it only needed a diesel fuel filter, 2-3 batteries, tires, T-belt/water pump and few other things. Starts at the first time and reliability and peace of mind is 100%

Downside.... Reaching speeds beyond 100 KmpH (60 MPH) takes at least 30 seconds!

That engine weighs 500lbs!? I didn't realize a small engine weighed that much.

Anyone have an idea of what the 3.4 weighs?

Roughly the same. 500 isn't bad at all, especially when compared to a behemoth 750 pound 4BT.

Not JDM but the best swap would be the 1.9L TDI swap. My other vehicle is a 2003 Jetta TDI. I think about ripping that motor out and dropping it in my rig all the time. Would it be easy, no. Would it be cheap, no. Would it be bad ass, yes. lol

Same here, we have a 2003 Jetta 5 spd TDi wagon. It's not fast, but it's certainly not slow. And it gets 48 mpg driving at 80 mph all day long on road trips., 44-is driving around town.

We've neve quite managed to get a 50+ mpg tank out of it yet, that would take a very specific sort of road trip (700+ miles of 65 mph driving).

Great motor, they are swapped into Zuki Samurai's sometimes.

Also, if you are thinking about spending close to $20K on a RHD diesel Toyota, get one of the 70 series LC's that are starting to show up in increasing numbers now that they're 25+ years old.

The 2.4td with an auto tranny is slow, prone to cracking cylinder heads and crap on fuel! The 3.0td is a much better option but still not great on fuel and still cracks cylinder heads!. Over here in the UK the 2.7 gas motor gets better mileage per gallon!
