Kids and Trail Rides

Figured this was a good spot for this.

How old were your kids (obviously assuming you have children) when you first took them wheeling with you?

Trying to decide whether or not taking my son (16 months) would be a good idea or not. Clearly nothing crazy or dangerous like trails with a potential for high damage or rollover but easy and moderate trails.

My kid has only been in the oven for a couple of months but I'll take him (hopefully) with me whenever I go. Dad took me everywhere all the time. No sense in stopping that tradition.

I agree and I want to get him out there as early as possible. Just not sure if there is a too early.

I started when my kiddo was around 5. At around 8, I tried letting her drive a little, but she picked it up better around 10

My brother and I wheel together more times than not. He has a son, 11 months on the 23rd of this month, and he's been wheeling with us 3-4 times so far since he was about 6 months old! He rides in a Recaro Performance Ride car seat and he loves going with us!

Now, these aren't dangerous trails, but there are some decent hill climbs/descents and off camber sections. We've talked about taking him to an actual off-road park, but his wife won't let us yet!!!

Yes to Recaro seats! I used the same brand when my kiddo was little. And to add a side note, I didn't go all out and scare the crap out of her. Just baby steps to see what she could handle til it became another day in paradise

do it. my nephew, and also a close friend have been taking their kids since the low single digit months. we even went camping with them at around 5-6 weeks I think.

My youngest was on the trail with us at three months. He handled it great. Stay off the rougher roads, support the neck with a rolled up towel or something, and make sure momma has everything she wants.

I took two of my kids out for the first time this weekend and they a 4 and 8. They had a great time.

I just took my 12 month old out for a little snow run for her second run. My 4 yr old loves going in "daddy's truck" anywhere we go. My suggestion for you if you haven't taken a kid out wheeling yet is to plan to only go for an hour the first time and bring plenty of snacks. After that first run you can gauge how well they will like it from there.

When my daughter was 2 she hated it the first time I took her out because it was too bumpy and her head was bouncing all over the place. In hindsight I should have realized that youngsters do not have the head and neck control fully developed until that are about 4. Keep that in mind, and avoid technical stuff with lots of bumps. She's almost 4 now and loves driving on gravel roads. She has the terminology messed up a little bit tho. She calls offroading, 'hot-roading'. But I secretly like that
