KidV's 1985 4Runner

So I mentioned in another thread that my heater has been intermittent, and the truck has been taking longer than normal to get to operation temp. I checked the coolant and it was a touch low, so I topped it off. Still sluggish on the temp dial and weird heat. Found coolant spray under the cap, so I replaced it. No joy, so I replaced the thermostat. I'm getting up to temp now and the heater is in better shape, but the coolant started welling up as I got to temp and now I'm blowing a fair amount of white smoke out the tailpipe on a cold start. **** me running but that sounds like a bad gasket, doesn't it? I yanked the plugs, and found this:

I expected to find one of those steam-cleaned. None of them are. 1, 2, and 4 look great to me, pale and sooty and dry (I dropped #4 in the snow, that's why it's darker). #3 appears to be caked in oil, and that sucks but it's not a blown head gasket. So now I'm stumped. What I DON'T have is oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil, or any overheating. I don't have an external coolant leak that I can find, and the exhaust doesn't have that sweet smell either. So I'm starting to question my initial diagnosis. I'm going to pick up one of those test kits to look for exhaust particles in the coolant tomorrow, any other ideas? Gotta be a bad ring or something on number three, but where's my coolant going?

I would think bad HG would pressurize the cooling system and cause coolant to well over even before reaching operating temp when coolant is not expanding much or boiling over from overheat, yet.
Those were my symptoms. I'd drive a couple of miles and find coolant splash around reserve tank from coolant overflowing.

Wouldn't a compression or a bleed down test help with your suspicions?

It would, if I knew that the rings and valves were good. With that crud in cylinder three I'm guessing that this motor is not as new as I thought it was and the rings are going, which will skew the compression test results.

I made a decision last night, I'm tired of chasing trouble with this particular motor and I'm going to run it into the ground. I've got some other projects that need doing that I've been neglecting, so I'm going to work on those and wait for this one to die. That'll give me time to decide if I'm going to build a b!tchin' 22RE to replace it or just get the 3RZ swap over with already. :bravo:

5VZ swap. Or go big and somehow squeeze the iforce motor in there and really not have room for your gargantuan hands to fit under the hood.

I've already ruled out the threefour. The 3RZ bolts up to my transmission, but the 5VZ doesn't and I don't want to pay to adapt an R150 for the gear drive transfer case.

A 5.7 would be sweet, but there is the issue of room for my manly hands.

Hey Kid, question on your rear bumper.... is that a home made fab job or did you order that from somewhere? I'm really liking the simplicity of it and want to ditch the factory chrome job mines still sporting.

it may take longer than you think. these engines are hard to kill. they just wont STOP running.

It's a one-off, made by one of the guys at CBI OffRoad Fab for his own truck before he sold it to me. It's been a great bumper, nice and sleek and it's held up to abuse well.

I can get you some better pics if you want, or you could contact CBI - I don't think this design ever made retail production, but I'm sure they'd be happy to make you one just like it. They're a great company to do business with.

I dunno, my last 22RE stopped running just fine :D. Skip to post 41 or thereabouts for the carnage.

but, did it still run?
pull the offending rod out, and I bet it would. :D

I personally know of this happening. girl was driving her boyfriends truck, an 83 I think. it had a bad knock. he told her to PARK it, and get a ride. he would have it towed home after work.
she didn't listen, and just drove it. it got worse, and the rod popped out the block.
they picked up the pieces, started the truck, and drove it the rest of the way home.

Yeah, if you can get some better pics, that would be great. Still getting ideas on what I want to do, but that is very similar to what I had in mind.

thanks
