KidV's 1985 4Runner

Got it all buttoned up and the manifold wrestled into place (seriously, I think whoever hung that exhaust was a noob because I had to play games with the jack and a couple ratchet straps get that lined up), filled with coolant... and found c0ckup number one, left a set of bolts on a coolant line finger-tight and it's pissing. The upper plenum and fuel rail are gonna have to come back off to get at it, and since I work tonight it's not gonna happen today.

DAMMIT I wanted to be done today.

No worries, hopefully you'll be done by the 2013 trip :)

Well, I don't know what yet but I jacked something up. It purrs like a kitten and is definitely firing on all cylinders, but 10 minutes after I fired it up it's still blowing gray smoke out the tailpipe. It doesn't smell acrid like burning oil and doesn't smell sweet like burning coolant, but it's burning something it isn't supposed to.

I'll wait until it cools down and look to see if there's oil in the coolant.

why are you tearing it down again? 10 minutes is nothing. it took a few days of driving to clear out the smoke on Subaru once.

Unless you bought a cometic brand gasket you will need a new one. Before you get crazy, make sure youare actually using coolant, check your radiator for bubbles or get a head gasket checker from napa. You could have dumped some coolant down the exhaust. You can take it for a drive too, keeping a close eye on the gauge and if it doesn't clear up bring it home and pull the plugs. After a cool off of course. The plugs will tell you what cylinder is the culprit.

bet ya when you go drive it, you start to get a ton of smoke too. I had to run my toyota all day and even then when I thought it stopped smoking, I'd go for a drive and it would come back. I'm not kidding either, ran it for like 6 hours just cause I had some oil and coolant in the exhaust. Turbo went on that subaru... oh man was that bad. took forever!

guess I have more time for sliders.

and how does that happen. well how bout the oil, any coolant in there?

see how much fun bad parts are?

As stated above, I would drive it for a day and see what it does... keeping an eye on the temp and oil pressure of course.

really hoping its just residual... you can't have oil or coolant leak into the combustion chamber and expect 120psi or more to not push back into one of those systems. Im not so sure its leaking into the cylinder. For that matter, check your oil cap again. a little bit of air is normal though. might just have a minor leak of oil to the coolant. Double check your head bolts are tightened. The head you put on looks like it was machined already, right?

drive it, and just keep checking your coolant and oil levels and condition. unless you've found something we don't know of yet.
