KidV's 1985 4Runner

So now you think you are cool enough to start chopping?

Nah, I ain't cool like you. I'm just flailing around for ways to deal with that crappy rust. I'm nowhere near good enough with a welder to be chopping and splicing the entire rear end, and I don't have the budget to pay a shop, so this is all a pipe dream right now.

I can't even weld. LOL!

You're thinking about chopping your 4Runner up?

I'll just leave this here....

In my opinion; I would fix the rust and keep it the way it is. Your 4Runner looks awesome already!

damn those actually look pretty good.

If you ever need an extra hand later on, I'm getting pretty good at precision cutting with a sawzall.

HOLY CRAP 4.7 GEARS ARE THE BOMB

I will never wheel a stock transfer case again. If I ever start another build, transfer case gears will be first. Before tires, before a lift, before a locker, I will have lower transfer case gears first. They're the awesomest awesome that has ever awesomed.

In other news, I'm still rubbing a bit in front. I don't know how, but it's happening. So I need to shove the axle forward an inch, and that means I need to make crossover happen soonish. Hmph.

What did the gears cost you?

They're around $450 new, and you have to have a gear-drive case to put them in. I found a deal on a used case that already had them installed, so I'm only into them $300.

With that gear drive case, another extremely useful mod you can do is a proper driveline parking brake between the case and the rear driveshaft--you can hold a 45 deg hill with those things. Glad to hear the gears worked so well!

Your 4Runner is looking niiiiiiiice.

Thanks. I wish I were starting with a nice clean platform like yours.

that one from today? looks like snakes right next to that nice little rock garden.

Yus! I'm so tired of Rattlesnake and Constrictor, I need for American Fork Canyon to open.

The problem with a tcase ebrake is it's not enough to pass safety around here. I'd have to rig another ebrake handle in the cab, and that doesn't sound like fun.

What exactly do you mean? How is it not enough for safety, and why would you need another handle?

Driveshaft brakes and line locks aren't street legal in Utah.

Not that you can't have them on the truck, but they don't count as e-brakes for inspection/safety purposes. So I'd need one handle for the ebrakes to pass inspection, and another for the tcase brake.

It's silly. I'm planning on replacing the rear drums with a caliper from a sports car that has an ebrake lever, and using the rotor from a third car, and putting them all together with a bracket I'm going to cut out of scrap with my angle grinder, and THAT'S going to pass safety.

But not a driveshaft brake.

haha, ahh yes that makes sense. You can slap together parts from other vehicles but you can't use a perfectly safe setup. :)

My rig did not even have the e-brake cables on the axle. I was so happy when I got my t-case brake.

Are you running dual cases? I've been thinking about MC 4.7s for my rear case but they're so expensive new and hard to find used.

I bet you could make or buy a bracket that pulls both rear drums, but it has a third/center slot for the cable to the tcase drum. same parking brake handle.

I've never seen it done, but I've never thought to look it up either. it should, in theory, work. The bracket shouldn't kick to one side because it's got even tension on the brakes. while it moves, as long as you have the right length for the tcase brake, it will lock up right with the others.
