KidV's 1985 4Runner

They're around $450 new, and you have to have a gear-drive case to put them in. I found a deal on a used case that already had them installed, so I'm only into them $300.

Make sure you don't get rid of your old TC as there will come a day when you want more gear and for a couple of hundred you can have an Ultimate Dual Case setup. Welcome to the low gear club. I agree it should be the first mod done if your gonna wheel hard:reddance:

I bet you could make or buy a bracket that pulls both rear drums, but it has a third/center slot for the cable to the tcase drum. same parking brake handle.

I've never seen it done, but I've never thought to look it up either. it should, in theory, work. The bracket shouldn't kick to one side because it's got even tension on the brakes. while it moves, as long as you have the right length for the tcase brake, it will lock up right with the others.

Hmm. That's an interesting thought, Mike, I'll chew on that. Thanks!

Are you running dual cases? I've been thinking about MC 4.7s for my rear case but they're so expensive new and hard to find used.

Yeah, duals are still on the table, but if I do it it'll be because I want the option of 2.28 back, not because I think I'll ever need low/low with the 4.7s.

Pyro, you're running dual 2.28 now? Right now I've got 33's, 5.29s, and the single 4.7 case. In my opinion, having wheeled it this way exactly once ;), 2.28 x 4.7 would be just retarded. Unless you still had 4.10 diffs or were running 40s or something, I can't imagine needing that much gear reduction. I think (in my oh-so-expert opinion) unless you find yourself stalling out on obstacles, 2.28 x 2.28 is plenty and you should put that money somewhere else.

Im running 2.28 x 2.28 with 5.29's and 39.5" tires and there have been times where I have wished I had more gear. The thing to remember is that with dual cases you don't always want to be in 1st gear. Some times a taller transmission gear with Low Low is the trick. In almost every case I agree that 2.28x2.28 is all most of us will ever need. The runner is looking great keep up the good work and wheel the snot out of it

I'm running 4.56 gears and 36" Swamper, which are about 35" tall. I know what both you guys mean and I'm torn. 2.28x2.28 is good the vast majority of the time but sometimes I do stall out in first with my tired 22RE. I can see where a 2.28x4.70 would be useful but it's down the list for value. I'd like to try it out on another truck.

Sounds like you need to be regeared to 529 with 35 inch tires

I threw a spark plug wire this morning, how often does that happen?

Hit a bump and the truck started stumbling. Pulled over and popped the hood and found the boot on number two had popped completely off the distributor and was just hanging loose. Weirdest thing ever.

Everyone needs a buddy down the street with a CNC machine.

Cheaper than Trailgear and no waiting for shipping. 6" shackles to replace the 5" I've got in front now, and new frameplates and gussets to reinstall the sliders I salvaged from Stumpy.

Maybe some day I'll have a truck with enough panache for a nice classy name like Eileen, but it just didn't stick to this one.

Please say hi to the Gray Bastard. Much more fitting, I think.

Fuel filter relocation. I highly recommend this, the stock filter location is garbage and an utter PITA. This required no mods, the hoses will reach. I unfastened an existing bolt on the firewall and bolted the filter down. I'll add a bracket from the other side of the filter to a lower spot in the firewall just to prevent vibration fatigue on the one side.

Thanks for the heads up...mine went a little like this:

The stripped stud? No, I went wheeling instead. Probably gonna jam it full of metal weld and pray. :D

(Because none of the rest of you can read Mike's cell phone IMs, he's talking about the helicoil I stripped in the head and asked his advice about. My truck sounds like my folks old 71 VW now!)

OK so my question then is... did you upgrade the stud size or was it just a thread repair? On my mazda I needed larger bolts to support the extra weight of the larger turbo on the manifold. I stopped by oreillys (because to be fair they do have good bolts for a manifold in the little green packages) and bought a helicoil kit and larger bolts. I don't remember what I used, but the point is that you might want to bump up the size just a bit for the hell of it. That way you can drill apart the helicoil.

Remember.... everybody gets ONE.
