KidV's 1985 4Runner

No, it's still the stock stud size. It stripped, I drilled it out and coiled it, and it stripped again, I never did get it to torque.

i have to think it's got a soft spot in the aluminum. I'll be replacing the head eventually, but I need something that's going to last me around a year or so. You think a bigger stud is a better idea than metal bond?

Well it all depends on if you will ever have to pull the stud again (IE clearance to move the manifold around.) one is certainly easier than the other.

Came out to my truck yesterday morning and found an oil slick underneath . Had to put my spare quart of oil in it to get the level back onto the stick, and then I had to put another quart in when I got home 20 minutes later. Holy oil leak, batman!

I'm not sure where it's coming from. It's all down the front of the block, but it's clean right under the valve cover. My next thought was the front main, but after getting the front end torn down I found the oil pump and the backside of the crank pulley pretty clean too. So maybe the timing chain cover, but I don't see where. I cleaned it up yesterday and bought some of that oil dye and a UV lamp, hopefully I can find it today.

Still sounds like alot less trouble then my stupid engine...

Hope you get er fixed!

You need to swap your motor for a 2UZ. It's asking for it. Practically begging for it, in fact.

What in hell is that giant bolt on top of the oil pump that does nothing? That was my leak. Cranked it down and so far so good. Back to the "other" truck now...

I was thinking LS1... I think I can even get it to pass CA BS emission laws and such.

Although part of me wants me to sell it and buy a 5th gen Trail Edition or an FR-S

wait... THAT bolt?

and it's probably for the oil cooler...?

I wondered if that was what it was, or maybe for a pressure tester fitting or something? I've never seen a 22RE with anything threaded in there. Just that great big 21mm bolt.

You mentioned possibly replacing the head, so this may not be a cost effective option, but if you need something stronger than a helicoil, check out this company. Just used them for the stripped head bolt holes in the block of my camry, very easy to use and super strong.

Faced with the need to do something with my truck, but hampered by the minor problem of a lack of funds and the major problem of a lack of motivation to do anything substantial (it's hot out there!), I took a rattlecan of rust encapsulator to the rusty quarterpanels. It almost doesn't look horrible, so I used the rest of the can on the offcolor body panels. Now my truck is just various shades of grey instead of various shades of grey and white and brown and red.

The color isn't a close enough match that I can leave it like that though - before, it looked like I didn't give a shit. Now it looks like I give a shit but I'm lazy. I'll need to grab a couple more cans and do the rest as well.

Rattle can flat black. Mine started the same way. Just trying to cover the bad spots and then the rest for good measure.

What an epic weekend! I'm still exhausted.

We camped Friday night up American Fork Canyon with a grip of awesome guys from Rocky Mountain Extreme 4x4, the local wheeling forum/club. One of the guys did a great job organizing some simple campfire classes for everybody, so we talked about where to wheel in Utah, what spares and recovery gear everybody carries, had a TreadLightly discussion, and generally had a good time. Next morning we split up into groups to hit various trails - I ran with the lead group going up Mineral Basin. We had a great time, and I sent my truck up several lines I hadn't tried before and made most of them. Then we came back down into the valley heat, ate dinner, and slept the sleep of the just.

Next morning I met up with a group of ruffians from T4R.org, TacomaWorld, and our own little club Utah DesertRunners. We drove up Rattlesnake trail in Five Mile Pass, then the guys with stockish rigs parked theirs and piled in while we continued up the 4.5/5 rated Constrictor. I got turned back at Radiator Rapids and had to take a winch, which made me mad because my '86 made that obstacle before, but I was with a fellow who knew the trail well and was a great spotter too, so maybe I just need to get to know it and my truck better.

Or maybe I need a front locker.

But on to the good stuff. I have complete video of both these runs, but my editing software is on my own PC and it's down right now, so you'll have to settle for pics.

Saturday fun on Mineral Basin in American Fork Canyon:

And Sunday, on the Rattlesnake and Constrictor trails in Five Mile Pass:

I wheeled the Grey Bastard about as hard as I have yet this weekend, really pushed my boundaries. I made several obstacles and harder lines that I've bypassed on previous runs, and got to know the truck and my own ability a lot better. I also beat the crap out of the poor truck, which ought to make slacker happy - my drivers fender and both rear quarterpanels/mudflaps gave their lives for the cause, and the passenger door is on the walking wounded list.
