KidV's 1985 4Runner

No, it's skittle time. :(

This motor is tired - it's gobbling oil and coolant. I missed a trip this weekend because I didn't trust it, and that won't do. So I picked up a used motor (painted orange, with a green valve cover, blech! It looks like a skittle.) that's going in right now, and that'll buy me time while I figure what's next.

So since you bought your motor from AJ and his runner was "the monster" and you transferred it to your truck, does that turn the bastard into Frankenstein?

The Bastard is already a frankenstein - fenders from one truck, cylinder head and rear axle from another, fiberglass top from a third. :)

It took me one day to pull the old motor and get the new one in, or at least lined up and resting on the motor mounts. It's taken me two additional mornings to try and wrestle the thing into position so the holes for the starter line up, and it's gone done and pissed me off. I'm taking Christmas off, and then if the weather holds I'm going to hook up the hoist again and take the weight off the motor and hope I can get those bolt holes lined up.

Heck, I would've offered to lend a hand Tuesday, if I had known. Unfortunately, I've got family obligations through the rest of the week.

Lots of little techniques to get everything lined up: Use the hoist to tilt the engine fore or aft while it's sitting on the motor mounts, so it lines up with the trans.

Put a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt, to spin the engine slightly until the splines of the input shaft and clutch disc line up and then they'll slide together.

Use a jack under the trans to raise or lower it so it lines up square with the engine. Sometimes jacking the trans up, and then getting the engine into position and bolted to the trans. while it's still hanging from the hoist is easiest. Then just lower the now bolted together engine and trans. down onto the mounts.

Make sure the clutch disc is centered between the flywheel and pressure plate when torquing down the pressure plate.

Make sure the pilot bushing or bearing is in good condition, and that the input shaft snout isn't deformed in any way.

I hope it comes together smoothly for you.

Merry Christmas and Happy new Year to you and yours.

Brian

Hey, thanks Brian, Happy Holidays to you too!

The motor is mostly lined up. It's seated in the transmission and sitting square on the motor mounts, and the bellhousing bolts are all threaded but not tightened yet. The single part that's giving me fits is the hole for the starter bolt in the flange on the back of the motor - it's not quite lining up with the threaded hole in the bell housing and I can't get the bolt started. It's a stupid little thing, and I would have thought that a little coercion with a pry bar would have settled the shifted the motor against the trans just enough, but I haven't been able to make it happen yet.

Merry Christmas Kid! You're up early.

Here's the hideous thing in all it's glory:

Today's the first day since the 22nd that a) it's been warm enough to wrench and b) I haven't been sick with the flu, so I've been in the driveway all day getting a bunch of progress made. The motor has been sitting on the mounts for a couple weeks, but I wrangled it around just enough to get that starter bolt in, got everything on the header side hooked up (alt, PS pump, etc), replaced the boot on the clutch slave and reinstalled it, hooked up the fuel injection and other harness connectors, installed the upper plenum, ohmed out my old TPS and installed it, installed the throttle body, and sorted out the vacuum lines. Most of them anyway - one is missing (wtf) and I split another wide open because it was too cold to expand over the nipple, so I might just order up a complete set of replacement line. Oh, and I had to deSkittle it - I couldn't hack the colors. It's still orange underneath, but at least it's got my old valve cover now (which was cleaner anyway).

I took the radiator in to get the brackets rewelded and get it cleaned, I got that back yesterday (also ordered a set of the FailGear silicone radiator hoses which are waiting to go on). If I can get out of this warm comfy chair and away from the computer, I might have time to get the belts on and radiator hooked up and have a running truck before dark, but that's looking iffy at best. This is a very comfy chair right now.

oh wow didn't know you were doing all this... well if it helps any, I was swapping engines between cars during the same period. now neither one runs because I haven't felt like working on them.

It's hard to get motivated in the winter. I need a heated shop to wrench in.

Anybody know the name of the fat vacuum line that runs between the valve cover and the front of the intake plenum? Not the PCV line, the other one.

I just picked one up for an old bbq tank I am not using anymore, I'd let you borrow it if I was a few thousand miles closer, lol.

Dude those things are legit and ftw. My buddy brings his over and make garage work easier lol

breather hose.

oh don't get me wrong... I had each one on a lift in a nice clean shop with 10 lifts (10 more on the way!) but I just had enough of it.
