Knock/Rattle in steering column or front end

On the way home tonight, I noticed a slight knocking or rattling sound in the steering column down next to the pedals. I assume it is in the column or somewhere near there. I just crawled out from under it and I didn't find anything loose enough to rattle. The only thing I did notice is I have some movement where the steering shaft comes out of the firewall before it attaches at the coupler. There is grease coming out from that area under the boot. Is this common in an 08 runner? I have an 04 Chevy that is notorious for these problems. Any other ideas what it may be?
