The knock sensor does what it says- it senses knocks. Whenever the engine knocks, due to lugging, out of time, poor gas or whatever, the knock sensor sends a signal to the ECU ( engine computer) to adjust the engine tuning to eliminate the knock. Most EFI vehicles have them.
They are easy to test. Remove the electrical connector from the knock sensor, connect a digital multimeter set to the lowest AC volts scale. Knock on the sensor with a screwdriver or something and watch the meter - you should see a small voltage generated. Knock harder- tthe voltage should increase. If so, and close to spec- the sensor is good. Then you would check the wiring between sensor and ECU for continuity.
I dont know where the knock sensor is located on the V6 but it should be easy to find out.

Unless you plan on tearing down just about the entire motor...no way you test it.....it's located underneath the intake manifold!

I'd love to know what engineer with too many college degrees to speak of, but no common sense placed this thing where it's at. You can however replace the sensor without ripping the motor apart. If you do plan on replacing it...it does cost close to $140....I've fabbed L brackets in the past and mounted it on top of the plenum...all it is...is a microphone....I've done this a few times with no problems...no codes...nothing.

I'd pull the EFI fuse, reset the ECM and try it again...see if you get the same codes...hopefully not.

Good Luck

i found the sensor, the wires from the sensor to the harness are toast. - do you have a picture i can look at for the L bracket? there is know way i want to pull the intake apart.
thanks.

Sorry took so long...but no, no pics of it. all you'll need is a L bracket...you can use a piece of angle iron for that matter...material doesn't matter. I mounted just behind the TPS on the plenum. I did tap the the bracket I made and just threaded the knock sensor into it...then just plug it into the harness...worked like a charm.
