Some teaser pics. Tire carrier is coming together.

My tube bender setup. .120 wall is still a pita to bend by hand.

I have 3 bends to select from. Not quite to the point where I am ready to fit those.

I had to cut one of the holes off. It interfered with the latch.

I might get a little more done today. We will see. I'm tired and pretty hungry from bending tube lol.

It looks like a ton of work but it really isnt, just detailed. I don't think it's as much work as making one from scratch but I have never done that before either. I should have the tailgate finished today and be trying to explain to the police why my license plate looks funny tomorrow lol.

Got what I needed to finish done but it's not complete in my eyes. I am going to try and fiberglass the metal into the license plate surround. Quite honestly I am not sure it's even possible to get a good bond but I am looking into it.

This is the final reinforcement plate. Nothing fancy but the weld nuts made it easy to install and it's pretty stiff.

The kind of washers I used on the holes away from the plate. There was no way to get the plate extended to cover all 7 holes. Those are all 1/8" washers and plate so the strength rose dramatically.

Some neoprene padding I picked up rather cheaply. It's tough, seals out water, and provides a shock cushion.

The toughest nut to get!

So I got a little lazy on a temporary license plate mount lol.

I have a video of me shaking the crap out of my truck by the strike plate but it refuses to upload. No worries. I'm fairly certain that I produce more force than my tire weighs. It's a solid mount. Next up on to the side bracket construction and reinforcing the side.

Got a surprise during the mockup. The tire carrier just stays where it should. That's a really strong latch in the 2nd gen carrier that's for sure.

Didn't have a lot of time so I looked at my bent pieces deciding which to use where.

Looks like the next step is to make the hinges and then make everything on the tire carrier before I reinforce so I know exactly where the hinges sit. I've got some room on the inside but I will be honest.....it isn't much. The reinforced will be more robust on the side though that's for sure.

Then I gotta figure out where to put the damn license plate....

Got a little further today. Bent and drilled the plate for the side panel.

Not bad for bending with a 3lbs hammer and some vise grips lol.

I need to chase some of the holes again tomorrow and weld up the nuts. Everything matches up well....but I really want this to be a stress free install for the bolts. There will be plenty of side stress on them as it is. I might get to making the interior brace but I might not. Definitely this weekend though. It's beautiful weather here. I have to take advantage of it.

Here's a side view during the day that shows the new springs. My buddy says they're about dead even but I also have a lot of junk in the back so a little forward rake.

What snorkel is that? $110 shipped is a really good price.

And we should go wheeling sometime, I live very close (in La Quinta). Though my Runner isn't as capable as yours I'm sure.

It's a hilux 167 snorkel. I believe they are still available on amazon for about the same price. I found mine on a big sale day though.

I wish I could go wheeling. Just found out I have to separate from the service so I am moving soon. Gotta wrap up what I'm doing and I will be back east for the holidays. Kinda bad timing but it's not horrible either. If I get a chance though I would like to go on a trail before I leave socal.

More from today. I got the side plate in which is good. Ran out of light for both fitting the brace in back of the plate and adding the bends to the tire carrier itself. I'm really hoping I get the mount right the first time. These are the details that are going to be a little tricky.

I am already starting to think about getting to the ladder. I should be able to start it this weekend as long as the wife okays it. I'm going to do all the finishing once I get both pieces set where I want them. Painting and grinding will certainly take a little while.

This is so much better than that one guy that just drilled into his sheet metal. I'm glad you went the reinforcement route, I wouldn't want to see a rig like yours with a giant gaping hole in it. Just stay awake from automatic car washes. :rofl:

Thanks! I still give him props for putting it out there....but his approach could have easily been better.

I never wash my truck really. I know it probably gets annoying with how much I say about monstaliner but dirt kinda just falls off of it when it rains. I swear I'm not sponsored by them lol. I would never use an automatic car wash on my truck anyway. I don't feel like removing the antenna lol.

I want to line mine so bad but I don't have a paint booth nor the time to do it. My t4r is my dd so I can't afford to have it mia while I take it apart, paint it, and put it back.
