Kyb shocks and springs

Hello,

I have installed kyb front struts with the coil spring that came pre assembled. Unfortunately I tossed the OEM front springs. Well after 9000 miles the kyb struts are blow and the ride completely sucks . Now I am looking into purchasing the 5100 front and rear. I do have the rear OEM springs that I will be using.

My question is , can I use the kyb springs with the 5100 front struts?

Anyone know the factory front rate vs the kyb?

BTW, the car is a 2004 sr5 2wd 6cyl.

Did you use the pre-assembled KYBs from RockAuto? I was planning on buying those, but 9000 miles is pretty terrible.

Talk to your supplier, you may be able to get warranty on those.

i think you got some flukes - they were in my truck for awhile, leveled the front end (for those looking for options to lift the front an inch) and rode really nice. sorry that happened to you, but im guessing thats an outlier.

That's fine, just ask them to warranty it and pay the difference for a better shocks. They should accept it, since supplier is not loosing money.

Yeah, i'm looking at 4600 myself now too.
 
Why won’t 5100s work with the stock springs? Sounds suspect. I thought that was a very common swap.
 
Well, that's not reasonable at all on their behalf. Oh well, then get a replacement under warranty and sell it on the here or on craigslist, for example. I'm sure that someone will get it as a replacement. At the same time, it could be just a defective unit. Was it just one that failed or all of them started to leak ?
 
Both fronts and one of the rears.

I will be using the front springs and the top hats to transfer it on the bilstiens so really no worth sending anything back.

This is my mother's truck so no off roading at all. Just going from a-b

maybe someone else can chime in, but i don't think s/he's right. i think 5100s will keep the rear at the same height as stock.
 
I have had the 5100's on mine for about 40k miles with the stock front and rear springs and no issues. Front set at 1.75" and the rear is stock height.
 
Same here on the Bilstein 5100 setup. I used OEM springs (purchased from a v8 owner on here) and the same rear springs.

Everything bolted right in and rides wonderful.
 
bilstein does say rear 5100s are for 1+ lift springs but as long as you dont offroad hard id say you will be fine, if in doubt, either get the 4600 (which are about the same valveing as 5100) or use a rear spacer for stock coils & 5100s or get FJ rear coils for the 5100.

Cabin filter
Engine filter
Transmission fluid and filter
Engine oil
Brake fluid flush
Diff fluid
Power steering fluid
Every weather strip molding outside of the car




Truck feels great. These bilstiens are not harsh at all. Very good ride with excellent rebound control unlike the garbage kyb.
 
garbage kyb's? never heard that before, most the members on here that use them & commented said they were a good stock type replacement shock & kyb in general get good reviews. you cant compare stock type shocks to upgraded bilsteins that cost twice as much. & if you do a search, theres are quite a few people that say the 5100s are a stiff/harsh ride... it all comes down to personal preference & what the vehicle will be used for.

sounds like you had a defective set if they leaked at 9000 miles, but thats what warranties are for.

i plan to use the kyb struts & shocks for a budget stock replacement to eliminate the x-reas in my on road only 4runner & have no reservations on using the kyb brand.
