Lack of back end customization

Okay, so there’s hundreds of options to customize 4R front ends. And while there aren’t nearly as many options to customize 4R sides, they tend to have pretty dramatic effect (wheels, step bars, rack), so no complaints there.

How does one make a unique 4R rear tho? Especially if I’m not going for an overly off-road vibe. Which means no metal bumpers, spare tire mounts or ladders.

I know that aftermarket taillights are kind of a no-brainer, but it seems like there are only 3 real options (Anzo, Morimoto, Unique Style Racing) 1 of which doesn’t really look that different from stock.

I’ve tinted the back window and 3rd brake light (cool, but minor). I don’t want to black out the rear badging because I’m of the opinion it doesn’t look good unless you've got a black 4R.

Any options out there that I'm missing?

Paint a picture of your 4runner on the tailgate.
This person did it with his truck.
I guess it makes it easier to find at the mall

I am asking for serious suggestions, though. It kind of surprises me that there aren't more aftermarket options for a vehicle that hasn't been redesigned in so long.

you could bust out a dremel and put some stylish speed vents in the rear bumper. Will probably shave of a few seconds 0-60 too.

I'm curious as to what kind of things you are expecting?

You mentioned not "off-road" type of items, so I'm curious what customizations you would expect for a car primarily marketed at outdoor enthusiasts and moms that don't want mini vans.

Some customizations that I feel are rad and not off-roady are: TRD Pro grille, amber LED fogs, custom rims, nerf steps, aftermarket roof rack. Some customizations that are too off-roady for me are lift kit, oversized all-terrain tires, light bars.

I'm just looking for ideas to make my 4Runner more interesting than the average soccer mom's. For all of the modified 4Runners I see, they mostly just look stock when sitting behind them in traffic.

If money is burning a hole in your pocket like that, and it's not made, make it or have someone make it?

Slap a tire carrier on there.

Is “off-roady” the new “ricer”?

Like all cars, there’s not much you can do (non-functional) and not appear tacky, but sure I’ll bite:

- wrap the rear emblem or the sombrero another color besides black.

- diff color/ material / wrap for the TRD valences if you have an sr5.

- wrap the roof spoiler a la venture model.

- new roof rack, as you can see that from the rear.

- shave the shark fin and replace with something more prominent or relocate to hatch.

None of these mods beat real AT/ MT tires or a wide stance if you want to flex on Ned Flanders.

These are excellent ideas, Snowtrooper. I’ve realized that I love the look of the 4R from all angles except the back and was hoping for something quick to make it look less average. But it’s not like there are options for other vehicles that aren’t available for the 4R.

As I see it, here’s a complete list of things that directly modify the 4Runner rear:
  • custom color roof spoiler
  • smoke 3rd brake light
  • tint window
  • blackout or custom color emblem
  • license plate frame, license plate cover
  • aftermarket tail lights
  • custom color rear valence
  • black exhaust tip

And these are things that indirectly change the look of the from the rear:
  • roof rails/roof rack
  • aux lights
  • spare tire mount/ladder
  • lift kit
  • larger/wider tires
  • aftermarket bumper

Same for the entire 60 mile radius around DC including all of NoVA.
