Ladder options?

From what I can find it seems Gobi is the only maker of a ladder.

Who else makes one and your opinion on it?

Next is what's everyone thought on the ladder. It looks cool but does anyone use it if you don't have a rack?

My plan is to keep the stock bars for now and maybe a cheap add on basket

If you don't have a rack and are not going to use the ladder for a storage/mounting spot, I don't see a reason for purchase.

Ecotechne also makes a pretty cool looking and quite functional ladder. I think there's a few pics of it in the later section of the Ecotechne roof rack group buy thread. Not sure about the current situation over in that part of the world right now though.

I have a Gobi rack on order, and I would be willing to sell the ladder! Shipping is probably cost prohibitive, though.

In my opinion, it is mostly aesthetic.

Having just installed my Gobi rack, you want the ladder to get on top of the rack, it is otherwise challenging to get up onto the roof.

Okay, good to know. I assumed I would be loading it from the ground or from a step/tire. I have never gotten on the roof before when loading, but I may just go ahead and install the ladder with the rack. I can uninstall it later if it doesn't get any use.

I have read people say that it is pretty useless, though, as you can't climb it well in muddy boots without kicking all over the rear door. About how far off the rear does the ladder rest?

The ladder is not easy to climb, agreed on that, and the bottom rung is mostly useless and you will damage your tailgate finish if you use that rung. I found stepping on the bumper and skipping the bottom rung works best.

The rack is enormous. You can load it from the ground, but it is helpful to be able to get up top as well if you have smaller items or heavy items to lower.

I agree. The roof is too flexible to walk on. Unless you have a platform or a couple of 2x planks tied down to walk on, don't get up on the roof.

I had the stock roof rails for a while and they just don't work. Every time I tied something down to the roof it scratched the roof paint up badly as things shifted when I was travelling off road.

I have a Baja Flat Utility Rack that I really like. I mostly tie things down by standing on my rock rails or the back tires. Once in a while I want to get up there on top of the rack but it is very hard to do since there is nowhere on the body to step up. Now that BajaRacks is making their ladder again I may get one. I like it more than the Gobi ladder.

Edit: As you can see in this signature picture, I now have the BajaRack ladder. I liked the looks of it more than the Gobi. And BajaRacks is here in California. I think they have a fabrication plant across the border in Mexico. I haven't used the ladder a lot, even though I have a BajaRacks flat utility roof rack I can walk on. I will if I want to get up there to stack firewood or for a higher viewpoint to shoot photos from.

Home Depot has a wide selection of ladders to choose from. I always go there to admire the ladder section.

The more popular ladder options are Gobi and C4 Fabrication. Victory 4x4 is currently developing a standalone ladder but I don't think it has been finished yet. I am running a C4 ladder with my Victory 4x4 rack currently.

I’ve been waiting forever for news on the Victory ladder. They told me about two weeks ago to expect news last week or this week

Take a look at the Greenlane off-road ladder. It looks way nicer in my opinion because it follow the lines of the 4Runner instead of being straight. Also, it’s aluminum so no rust issue and light enough that you don’t need to upgrade your struts.

I think I paid $220 and waited probably 2 months for my Gobi ladder. I have a Rotopax mounted to it, but other than that I don't use it. Not worth it in my opinion.
