Lake Arrowhead Trip and Snow Chains

Hey guys, about to take a trip later this week to Lake Arrowhead. Anyone with ideas of exact road conditions up there. Seems there is no snow as of right now. Are chains needed?

Now the main thing. Does anyone around the Brea area have chains that would fit 285/70/17 that I could borrow this weekend if needed? Will return Saturday night. Please let me know. Thanks.

Are you 4wd? Even if you are it's always recommended to carry chains in the mountains in the winter. Along with extra blankets,water, etc. You can always find the current conditions online with a quick search (can't remember if chp updates status or a different organization).
If you head up and theres snow on the ground slow down...a lot. Even experienced drivers can find themselves stuck or in an accident.

Not 4wd. Don't really drive in the snow too much. Where should I get chains for that size tire. And I'm assuming I can return if I don't use them, right?

You can pick up some cheap ones from wal-mart or any sporting good stores. Theyre two types. The best type are actual chains, the more popular type are cables with metal incorporated for traction. The cables work just fine though.
If you ever plan on heading up to the mountains in the winter I would just keep them for the future, pretty inexpensive. Practice putting them on at your house a few times to get comfortable, pretty frustrating doing it the first time in a blizzard.
 
Depending on when you're going, snow is not in the forecast until next week. Pay attention to the conditions and plan accordingly. I went up to Snow Summit in Big Bear on Saturday and got stuck behind slow drivers and chain control. A drive which normally takes me 1.5 hrs took 3+, I had serious road rage.

Was a while ago but they enforced R3 restrictions while i had a lowered subaru. put the cables on and my fenders didnt agree. lots of fun minus the 6 hours it took with bumper to bumper traffic all the way up :wacko:
 
Just buy the chains and throw them in the garage when you get back...CHP may require you to carry chains at the first dusting of snow and they'll be a lot more than $50 at the top/bottom of the mountain gas station if you find yourself in need of them. Personally, in 15 years of snowboarding i have put on chains only once or twice in the socal mountains but i always carry them. We can always hope for heavy snow!
