Land Cruiser...end of life

Good point! I'm looking forward to owning one day! I like the LX but have always been more of a fan of the understated Toyota look.

I saw one of these yesterday on the road. The one I saw definitely had the "look' of an old HJ45 "Troopy" Land Cruiser or an old Land Rover Defender.

Those are definitely cool. $35K for an NV2500, $12K for the 4WD conversion and then you have a blank canvas to do whatever. Not nearly as off-road capable as an LC, but good enough for most people.

I'm really intrigued by Ford's new lineup of the transit van. A full size high roof with extended 2500 class chassis, comes in 4x4, and comes with the 3.5 ecoboost with the 10 speed automatic for $52k? And they have some pretty fawkin awesome options - like optional dual alternators! Hell yeah. Dual AGM batteries - stock. A full programable switch panel for accessories! Independent rear AC/Heat units. The list of options is really long. And full of really great stuff. Stuff we can only dream of Toyota ever offering us in an SUV or truck.

Not to mention that it has a 10k lb GVWR and IIRC something like 10k lb tow rating. If ford put a bare bones SUV body on that same spec sheet - they'd never be able to build them fast enough.

How does this relate to the death of the land cruiser in the USA - you could buy the Transit with the ecoboost and awd, buy a 2 door Bronco with 35's and dual lockers, and set it up to tow it behind the Transit - all for less than a new Land Cruiser. And that is why the land cruiser is dead.

Let’s see how all those vehicles last? Days stuck in service bay waiting for parts....

For first six months of my brother’s Ford Raptor ownership, it spent more time at dealership than in his garage.

Good luck with that plan Jetboy.

I will keep trucking along in my old reliable Cruiser....

+1

I am considering buying one of these new V8 Turbo Diesels for my place in Costa Rica. $60K as the taxes are high, but such a great, long-lasting truck.

Wish we had the opportunity to buy those in the states, but apparantly if US citizenry own them then the planet will die from the exhaust, and the driver is unsafe and will die from something or other...

Not sure if true, but i have read on other forums that these ride like sh!t...tractor like ride quality...true to form i guess. They really are good for farmers etc...but daily use, they are punishing.

To be honest, if above is true, then i rather get a Tacoma TRD Pro or simply a Tundra.

I've driven one for ~1500 miles, of that only maybe 100 miles were hard surface roads. In the dirt - it rides a lot like an 80 series on high load springs. It's rough. It rattles and shakes the hell out of everything inside at speed on washboard. They're very similar in design, weight, etc. The older leaf spring versions were probably more like any other leaf spring solid axle vehicle.

The things you forget until you drive one is the things like bump steer. It's not horrible. But it's not as nice as what you're used to with an IFS ride.

Yeah, i like to keep my kidneys where they are at....

I'd probably still take a Ford over a Mercedes Sprinter. I've done the Mercedes thing. Once. - HFS it was a rolling turd of a car. Never ever will I own another, except maybe a Unimog. I'd make an exception for that.

Haven't owned a Ford of any flavor since the 90's. I did buy Ford stock the day details leaked about the new Bronco. Someone at Ford is actually listening to what customers want and building it. Even if it is Ford quality. At least Ford is trying.

I have been thinking a long time about owning a Rubicon...i am a huge fan of it. But, day in day out, i know that it would grow old quickly. I have a family. I don’t rock crawl anymore. What i do nowadays is sight seeing with family on road trips and going to far off places to enjoy nature before i get too old.

Durability/reliability and comfort are my main priorities. I am in no mood nor do i have the knowledge to fix things on the fly in the middle of nowhere. And i have no need for separate vehicles for each separate hobby. No thanks. I rather have one vehicle that can take care of all my needs.

I picked the LC because of Toyota philosophy with LC200:

Land Cruiser Chief Engineer Sadayoshi Koyari explains: “For almost 60 years now, three key words have been the basis of each Land Cruiser generation: strength, durability and reliability. With the new Land Cruiser V8 we were determined to recognise the loyalty of Land Cruiser customers by providing a vehicle that will never betray their trust.”

I've been really seriously looking at swapping the 4R for an LC200 for many of the same reasons. I'm not doing as much offroad travel. The LC200 is a tough call for me. And candidly a big part of the issue is that I'm not sure I can accept the ethics of driving a 13mpg vehicle as a daily driver. Is that really okay to do? To me it matters enough that I'd have to at least think about buying another car so the LC200 would not be daily driven. For now - I'm working from home. And my current office is only a couple miles from home, so I ride my bike a lot of days. But there's something to be recognized about how poor the LC200 really is in fuel efficiency. It's pretty terrible by any standard.

I average around 15 in mixed driving...i do have BFG KO2. BUT i do not drive aggressively.

LC200 takes REGULAR gas. A MB G550 gets same mileage on premium gas. My old Lexus GX gets 18 mpg mixed...but that takes premium. My brother’s Raptor gets 18 i think...and that takes premium.

So, nah, i am good. No losing sleep due to violating any ethic standards.

At least with the LC200 you get some power to go with the shitty mileage.

That was my biggest hope for the LC300 - even moderately decent fuel efficiency. I've been holding out on doing anything until it came out. Now that it's DOA, I guess I'm just waiting to see what happens with the Tundra. If it's a turbo6 hybrid that gets 30mpg - I'll go that route. If not - maybe a cheap used LX570 and a Model 3.

But LX uses premium gas.............

I don't really care much about the cost of the fuel. It's the pollution.

I assume the lx can run the same fuel as the LC.

Your picture has a carbureted and un-catalyzed vehicle in it. The "pollution" you generate with that heap is probably more than a whole fleet of modern vehicles.
Put your money where your mouth is. Truck that thing to a crusher.

I suppose living in the States, and having a small farm en Costa Rica, makes this truck perfect for the mostly unpaved road driving I will be doing, as well as water fording. :yo:
