Late model 4Runner rust ?

I read this thread about a skid plate and noticed this truck has more rust underneath at 5k miles than mine does at 35k miles. It is in Texas which would mean no or minimal road salts ?
Any ongoing discussion about late model 4runner rust ?

not rust, just surface oxidation, most metal will change color like that but thats about it, nothing to worry about my 03 with 30k looks like that:

That is just the exhaust......it is an unfinished surface and thus will always get oxidized quickly. I would be worried if yours did not have this too.......you might want to crawl under the girl and take a look.

Frame will show some rust at welds. Exhaust flanges and bolts always rust. All that is normal, but if it wories you, rust proof the frame and change rusty bolts to stainless.

I am having the same problem. Mine is less than a year old and is rusting all over the chasis, diff, and some other places. I was really shocked when I saw it. I used it about 3 times in the snow and did underwashes all thru winter. I never saw a vehicle rust like this before. My 11 year old Camry went thru many winters and show no rust except the exhaust. I don't know if something is went wrong with the paint or rust proofing.

I'm not talking about the exhaust. Look at the alignment adjustment area and the forward skid plate. My 2001 has no signs of rust like this. I have not been exposed to road salts however .....but this pic is of a Texas 4Runner I guess I would expect zero rust.
