Question on your Roof Lights

Hello!

Thanks for all of the posting you do and how easily it is to ask you questions.

I am all about the details and always do things cleanly when it comes to builds, maybe it has to do with being a graphic designer or maybe a little bit of OCD either way I love what you're doing. I was curious to know how your wired up your roof lights on the Gobi racks. I've seen some messy wiring situations and I'm trying to avoid that. I figure why not ask the expert in a clean build.

Also how are you hooking it up to your interior? You have all sorts of gadgets that I assume you have some sort of awesome switch system.

Again thanks for all the info, keep posting photos I love the rig!

I have the wiring going up through the roof via the weather strip and down into the passenger A-Pillar.

Example (old photos, old lights, but you get the idea):

Regarding switching: Honestly I use physical switches, blanks with the rigid 'red' circular rocker switches for the lights.

I use the AOB switches for the air compressor and air locker switches. My front/top light bar is on one switch. My grill light bar is another switch. My fogs are controlled through the fog control dial on the light stalk. The rear lights (all 4) are on one switch.

My rock lights I control via the WARN remote because honestly they'll only be used for camping or when winching at night. My table light on my CBI swing arm is controlled via a push switch inside the rear cargo area. So I'd only be turning it on when at camp or working in the back.

Basically I said all that because when it comes down to it I only have 4 primary light switches I'd need to access while driving, top bar, grill bar, rear lights, fogs. And I actually prefer to have real and tactile switches especially while driving at speed off road.

I don't have anything against the SPOD/SwitchPros, but I don't like having to look at a devices to turn on lights. It's for sure cleaner visually, I'll admit that. But being that I only have 3 main light switches (fogs are controlled via the factory stalk) I just wouldn't justify the need for a touch screen or 8 spot controller. Lots of blank spaces would happen. And I don't want my air comp or locker controlled by something that could fail due to a software issue.

Hope that clears it up. That's just MY methodology, not at all an absolute.

Awesome build!

Was wondering if you could update your OP with more trip reports as presently there is only one trip listed, a FJ Summit. I love learning about builds, but I like seeing how they use them on adventures, especially on rigs like yours that are modded for overland/off road capability.

Thanks- looking forward to seeing your rig's adventures and misadventures.

I never wrote up trip reports for Moab, big sur, Idaho, Mojave road, etc and enough time has passed that I don't think I could tell a compelling story at this point.

Understood. Maybe future trips?? I enjoyed your FJ Summit report, especially this towards the end: "The reason we build these rigs varies, I think if you crawl malls…you’re doing yourself a disservice. Build these rigs, and travel, go explore, and be part of a community."

Safe travels...

Thank you for the info. The photo is super helpful. I saw that you'll be down at Goose Gear, maybe if I'm not out traveling for work I can stop by and say hey and check out the truck in person, if you're cool with it and timing works out.

Again thanks for the info.

Cheers!
Rico

Thanks, I'll be down there for 3-4 days while we work on the vehicle.

Also, almost done with the hood wrap:
