LawnDart's Build Thread

I will.

We broke the truck. I think we blew up the ABS pump 21 miles from the end.

Truck is running but my dashboard looks like a Christmas tree.

Some serious heuvos to beat the piss out of your 4Runner like that. Look forward to seeing the pic later. Hope she holds up for ya.

When I get back to a real computer I'll start posting photos.

The truck is driveble. I need to get it to a real OBD scanner to get the detailed codes. I kinda think a rock hit the front right wheel sensor and that caused the ABS system to go nuts.

We pulled into Guerro Negro tonight and Curt Leduc came up and said, "honestly...this Toyota impressed me. It impressed me a lot."

If you know who Curt is, that should make a lot of us toyota guys proud.

We went whale watching off Guerrero Negro in February. One of the most majestic experiences of my life.

So you found a way to turn all the nannies off????:yo:

Hahaha. Almost.

Truck, driver, and co driver are officially back on US soil.

Truck is running well. Brakes are shot. Rotors and pads are nuked. Truck squeaks so bad. But it got us there and back. I want a raptor so bad after this trip but every one of the Ford guys were impressed we kept up and the truck took the beating.

You could do everything we did in a stock truck. But way slower. Waaaay way slower.

Any damage to the raptors? Were they modified, and if so were the mods damaged worse than oem parts?

Also, how would a raptor be vs your 4runner for your non-baja trips, rock crawling and such?

Honestly the tightest stuff we did was on day 1 crawling through some deep washouts where the raptors dragged ass. The raptors have a huge gas tank and do 18-20mpg.

Most raptors were stock 17's. Some had the new prototype fox raptor shock kits.

We had a ton of flats with the raptors. Cameron's raptor had a starter motor issue but for the most part they did great. One jeep totally shit the bed and had to get trailered home.

LawnDart How's your nav/comm stuff holding up in the Ram mounts?

Not a single problem. We did all our nav with lead nav and my co driver would call out turns using a provided GPX file. Some of the terrain was like doing black bear pass...but at 50mph.

Very cool! I'm used to hard mounted stuff or ......maps.... for this type of driving/terrain.

Sorry to hear about your brakes, that's one of the areas that gets upgraded in serious desert trucks early on. It's not sexy but it sure is useful!

It's just stuff. It can all be fixed.

Looking forward to the 4R body swap onto a Raptor chassis. :yo:

Toyota has totally destroyed their TRD program.

Whereas Ford Perormance has really and truly tested the raptor off road. They used last years ToM as a validation test and found some issues. I am sincerely impressed the raptor can move like it does with the stability it has at speeds that are insane.

The Toyota fanboys are having heart attacks at that statement. the 4Runners are great vehicles for what they are, however they are not even in the same ball park as Raptors for certain types of driving. Nothing wrong with that, it's just the truth.

My 2013 F250 I sold to buy my 2017 TRD Off Road was leaps and bounds ahead amentity and creature comfort wise, and after 77k miles I'll be impressed if my 4Runner has the same build quality the F250 maintained.

4Runners are great, but Ford still makes some very, very good trucks. Contrary to some people's seeming beliefs, the two are not mutually exclusive.

The TRD badge became a cash-grab, slap some cool paint on and give it *slightly* better suspension and charge $5k mores. Gotta hand it to Toyota's marketing team though... they didn't even have to throw in leather seats. Ford has been stepping up their game with both off-road toys and track toys (see Raptor and Shelby GT350R, Gen 2 GT). If I ever go American it sure as hell won't be a Chevy, still haven't ruled out dodge...

How did your suspension hold up?

Held up great, I think we need bump stop extensions in the front however, and maybe increase the rebound/compression speeds to prevent it bottoming out.

For overland use having it nice and squishy is great, but for offroad that's not great.

Day 8: https://www.race-dezert.com/home/trail-missions-day-8-santa-rosalia-guerrero-negro-149151.html

So here's the final tally of what broke:
- Both fenders are toast, will need to be replaced, cut, rolled, tubbed.
- ABS system took a rock to the front passenger sensor (we think) so my truck's light cluster is lit up like a christmas tree. No ABS currently.
- I need to replace the secondary air intake sensor, which got chewed through by my air manifold mount.
- Pelfrey battery tray is actually bowed out from the vibrations
- I need new rotors and pads
- The truck needs an alignment really bad, as it's all screwed up.

But overall...not too bad. Paint didn't get totally thrashed. Got pinstriped bad, but overall...the truck got us through 1500 miles of intense driving offroad, and I'm extremely thankful for that.

The light cluster also lights all up when one of the abs cables break. They are very, very thin and weak. Make sure those are thoroughly inspected/tested prior to replacing the sensor. The wires are about $70 a corner, but I "thought" the sensors were like $400-$500 a pop.. Just a suggestion.

Look forward to seeing it at FJ Summit!
