LawnDart's Build Thread

I detest the Toyota diesel, especially for what Diesel Toys wants for it. It's pretty gutless, and I'd rather have the Cummins, if you could legally install one in the 4Runner. Plus parts availability is stupid simple.

Having driven a 4th Gen with the Cummins 4BT, an old Tahoe with the 4BT, and several of the D4-D conversions from Diesel Toys: I would much rather have the D4-D engine. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? IMHO - Yes. Can I afford one? NOPE!

Side note: I have no experience with the new Cummins engines, but it is all irrelevant as it is still cost prohibitive for me.

So last night while I was working out I watched the Video on you and your truck. Seeing the video was pretty cool as I learned more about the truck and seeing some of the stuff (the drop down fridge) in action was cool.

Great Video and well worth the watch.

ps I am sure it was posted somewhere along the way and I missed it.

My dog had the back seat to himself, when he was not in the driver seat.

Still, I do like that rear bumper.

Anyhow last you hear from me hear, sorry to disturb you...carry on.

No kidding. There are very few places in the continental US were you legitimately need additional fuel.

I carry two fuel cans, and in Baja we mainly schlepped gas for the Currie jeeps, which had really short ranges, I think sub 200 miles with their setups.

Again, more power surely appeals to me, but when it comes at the hang up of "you can't reliably go into eastern oregon without worrying about fuel consumption, and Baja won't ever happen again" I have to respectfully pass.

Baja is definitely one of those places you can never have too much fuel. DAMHIK

Again that's through the lens of "my needs."

I get the appeal of more power. But making something that's normally not picky about gas...picky about gas, for an overlanding setup...kind of defeats the point.

I know a lot of people build these awesome overland setups and never really travel much beyond their state...but...uh...

Agreed. All of my motorcycles have a "low power" setting that reduces timing for use where the gas quality is poor. Like in Baja. That's also one of my favorite things about my 4Runner vs. the X5 I used to drive: When I'm in Baja I don't care about the gas (although I do try to filter it as it's poured into the tank). Those who don't go to Baja may not have that concern, but you and I do.

So ONE of the project ideas I do have feelers out for...LS conversion. I'm not joking. It's do-able. And my god it would piss off the purists.

I vote yes because my vote is pointless and I just want to hear that LS and see real power in your 4runner. :nerd: Seriously, I agree it would be a worthy swap.

Doesn’t take much to piss off most people. :noidea:

Haters gonna hate.

Who gives a shit about the purists. Either you have the $ and balls or you don’t.
LawnDart I wasn’t trying to make a dig at you. Just stating Im not one to worry about the purist aspect of it. You’ve already beaten your truck more than most. Why not finish her off with an LS swap? You’d be internet famous. Lol

That sounds amazingly awesome!! Forgive my ignorance, will an LS run on Baja gas? I suspect yes, but just don't know.

What happened to keep it simple and lightweight? Do you think it can be made as reliable as the stock motor?

An LS will run fine on baja gas as long as you don't have a high compression ratio and/or run a lot of timing. You could honestly carry a laptop with you loaded with different tunes for low quality gas, high octane fuel, etc. That's part of the beauty of the LS platform, they are very well supported by the aftermarket.

There are a number of transmissions you could go with behind that LS depending on how many gears you think you need. After that, the weak links will be the front and rear diffs.
