LBJ Failure and CV

So I experienced my first LBJ failure today on the way home from school and was it ever scary. Will see if I can get a new one tomorrow but my CV has me confused. Do I need a new one?

Minimum you'll need a new boot kit. I think you'll have to clean things up and see how it looks. I'm curious to see what the answer is.

Did you have any other damage? That's pretty cold for wrenching.

NO, your CV is OK. You may need a rubber boot if it is torn. Just reinsert your CV back in.
Also get CV axle grease.

Buy a OEM LBJ and nothing else.

I'll give it a clean tomorrow after class. Really hope someone in town has a LBJ in stock. Is that yellow gunk just grease? Is the grease called CV axle grease? And the boot doesnt appear to be torn. I might have to get a new fastener though. Luckily there's an auto club on the base here that I will get it towed to if there's an lbj in stock. Way too cold to wrench ha

Also nissanh is the moog one not a good alternative?

Use an OEM Toyota LBJ. Moog is greasable but the quality isn't there.

Make sure to check out your tie rod ends and end links and upper ball joint and other stuff too.

How many miles were on the LBJ? You may want to do both sides while you're at it. The other side is probably in similar condition to the one that just failed.

So definitely wont be going with Moog. I don't think the LBJs have ever been replaced and the truck has 290,000 kilometres on it. I will also definitely examine the other side and have it replaced asap.

Best bet my friend is get both sides Via Toyota.

All other aftermarket LBJ's have high failure rates. You don't want this to happen again especially at highway speeds...

Thankfully you're ok!

Yes ONLY OEM. I bought moog LBJ's shipped for $70 or so. Within a month I went with OEM. Make sure you have a ball joint separator to remove the outer tie-rod from the LBJ. Also get the inner CV repair kit (comes with rubber boot, the clamp and grease). This don't have to be OEM. Get it properly fixed than repeating it once more.

Don't you have a dealer near?

If you find your Canadian dealer to be very expensive for LBJs (as mine was) they can be ordered from Toyota of Dallas who will ship to you in Canada and save you a bundle, less than 1/2 price all said and done. but only if you have the time to wait for the shipping.

Good luck.

Toyota Parts Direct - Your Canadian Source For OEM Toyota Parts Online | Toyota Parts Direct has decent prices too.

But yeah, Toyota Dallas.

I'm hoping I don't experience an LBJ failure before I've had time to replace them. Previous owner put MOOG ones in. They apparently have about 20,000kms on them now.

I just need to put together some funds to order everything at once. LBJ, UBJ, ITE, OTE and new bushings so I can put the sway bar back in.

Wheel bearings too...maybe.. if they're not too hard to replace.

I've read a couple write-ups on the front wheel bearings with a 4X4 and it sounds like a complete PIA. Haven't read about too many failures on the 4X4 however.

Good to know. I'd like to avoid changing them if I don't have to. Although I think I'm still on th efactory ones and the truck has 176K miles on it now.

I keep hearing this and would like more information, and hopefully some evidence.

It's hard to imagine a reputable manufacturer like Moog would continue to produce a faulty product. Sure, maybe its not quite as nice as OEM and won't last almost 300,000km. But 20,000km and you're thinking of replacing them? that seems highly impractical.

I've raced cars for about a decade and abused them with drifting and rolling over curbs, etc. I always replaced engine stuff with OEM and suspension with aftermarket. I have never seen a moog anything fail.

Ya know I had the same outlook on this too. For years I used nothing but MOOG for suspension replacement parts on many of my vehicles. Never once had any issues. But being here for the last few years these threads pop up where peoples LBJ's were failing and they just replaced them not long ago with moog products or any other aftermarket manufacture.

It was very discouraging. So instead of chancing be apart of the statistic of failed aftermarket LBJ I've purchased OEM and never looked back on any of my rigs.

Between here and the FB group there's been a good bit of failures. Recently a guy on the FB group replaced his about 9 months ago with moog. It failed the other night and luckily he was ok.

In just the short time I've been on T4R.org, I can't tell you how many threads and posts I've read about non OEM LBJ's failing with very little mileage on them (as little as 10-12K miles on them). It's why everyone on here preaches OEM parts.

In any case, I'd rather pay double the price for OEM and have them last 300K than pay half the price for Aftermarket products that last even 100K (if you're lucky).

I've experienced the same situation with my old Chevy Cavaliers & wheel bearings. Even the best aftermarket would last maybe 50k if you were lucky. Original OEM set lasts 150k easy.

It's really not hard to do the math. Spend a little more now to avoid having to do it again sooner rather than later.

It's different when you are talking about a non critical part like a sway bar end link or so. When the LBJ on these fail they do so catastrophically. Your entire wheel basically falls off. I would not risk this to a part that could be inferior. I plan to replace my LBJ with OEM when I do sometime in the near future. They were already replaced once in 05 under the recall, but probably have another 110k on them by now.

is the truck lifted or stock height?

Just installed TRD coils and 7.5 wraps with billys all round two days before this happened...very discouraging.

I do have a dealer in town but their prices are ridiculous.

I got some Napa ones with the lifetime warranty for now until I work full time in the summer and have enough cash to redo the entire front end. Hate being a student sometimes. I'll check both of these out when that comes. Thanks for all the help!
