LBJ installation mistake.

I did my LBJ's last night with the help from a friend (I'm not the most handy wrencher). We used an impact drill to secure the new bolts in. I didn't realize till after, it's suggested they be torqued into place. So a few questions please.

1: Am I ok, or should I torque them instead?
2: If I need to re-torque them, do I need to do the whole process over, or just loosen the 4 bolts, grab a torque wrench and tighten them down again?
3: Is an alignment necessary after doing LBJ's?\

I'd suggest u remove them and make sure u didn't stretch the bolts and if not then reinstall/(replace if stretched) and torque to spec with loctite.

1. You want those bolts torqued to spec, with blue thread locker. There are anecdotes of bolts shearing off, possibly due to stretching from over tightening based on confusion between the differences between early and later 3rd gens.

2. Not sure about that. If you're JUST torquing them, then probably OK to do in place. I would personally do the entire job over again with a new set of cotter pins and all new bolts with loctite. YMMV. Literally.

3. My alignment numbers did not change after doing the LBJs.

Thanks guys. I was worried this might be a problem. I only drove it 9 miles since replacing them. So hopefully those 9 miles didn't damage anything.
 
I’d lean towards ordering up some new bolts and torquing to spec the proper way.
Hard to know if using air gun caused them to stretch and why take any chances.
As pointed out in prior post, don’t forget to use some blue loctite.
I brought it in for an alignment when I replaced LBJ’s but I had also replaced inner & outer tie rid ends.
 
Can the bolts be visually inspected before replacing them? Also, is it safe to drive any short distances in the meantime or should I wait until I torque them down? I don't off-road, it's mostly a stock daily driver.

I would order 8 replacement bolts to be on the safe side.

You should be fine driving it on pavement in the meantime.

You can replace them one at a time without disassembling everything else. You'll probably have to turn the steering wheel to get a socket on a couple of them.

I'd recommend getting an alignment afterward. The first time I did lower ball joints nothing changes, but the second time my toe was off quite a bit.

Thanks again guys, one last thing, I noticed that the torque specs are different from 96-2000, 01-02. Does anyone have the correct torque secs for an 01 please?
 
1996-2000 use a flanged bolt Part #90080-10066
2001-2002 use a bolt and washer (it's a little longer than the bolts for 96-00) Part #90119-10933

If it were me, I'd use the earlier flanged bolts, a dab of Loctite and torque to 59ft/lb.

M10x1.25 x30mm 10.9 grade and loctight should work.

The #90080-10066 bolts are suppose to be torqued to 59 ft-lbf

The #90119-10933 bolts have a lower tensile strength and should only be torqued to 37 ft-lbf.

They have the same strength. It is bolt head design that dictates the different torque value - and they should have equivalent clamping force when done.

Highly dependent on what you mean by "impact drill"

Majorly different. I love my Milwaukee 1/2 impact. The nut drivers don't get crazy amount of torque on them. Great point Charlie.

I would use the early bolts. and if i had the later with the dust shield I would trash that and use the older bolt.. thats just me....i had a 2001, one side had dust shield , one did not, so obviously someone changed one side and got rid of it.
but the older bolts with higher torque are my choice
