Leak in the roof...dripping onto back seat (?)

2005 4Runner Sport. I think it has an after-market sunroof, although as I bought the car used I'm not entirely sure. A manual for it came with the vehicle.


It's been raining here, and I just noticed that the rear sear on the driver's side is wet. I looked up, and the felt/cloth "bolt" that appears to keep the ceiling fabric connect to the ceiling is soaked. so much so that it looks like it's dripping onto the seat.

The thing is this: The "bolt" on the other side is not wet at all, and the ceiling cloth near the wet bolt doesn't feel wet. Ther appears to be no staining on the ceiling indicative of past wetness.

The roof on the exterior of the truck appears fine. The seals around the sunroof appear fine. I haven't left the sunroof open.

Has anyone seen or heard of this? Is there any way I can access the roof or ceiling? Do these bolts pop out?

I have a number of rattles up there that I'd like to check out, so those last questions have been on my mind for a while.

Follow-up.

I bought a day's access at techinfo.toyota.com and looked at a lot of the repair manuals that dealt with the headliner and sunroofs.

I'm still not sure what's going on...unless the rear drip channel is clogged. I'm not able to see the opening of it unless I take the whole headliner down. I'm not sure I really want to do that.

That clip in the above picture was still wet today, and I yanked out. I expected water to drip out, but none did.

I'm at a loss. I suppose the next step would be to find an aftermarket sunroof installer and have him take a look.

It's easy to tell if it is a factory sunroof, or aftermarket. With the sunroof open, look at the edge of the roof. If the roof panel edge is folded downward it is factory. Is should also say Toyota on the glass.

If it looks like someone just cut a big opening in the roof and most likely put some type of trim or door edge gaurd like materail around the sunroof opening to cover up where the hole was cut.....well that would be aftermarket.

Factory sunroof - dealer can get you parts, repair it for you.

Aftermarket - dealer will not be able to help you, unless they deal with a sunroof add-on company to add this type of stuff to their vehicles. Even then, this is an aftermarket part that was put on in 2005. Finding parts may be hard. And most dealers won't even bother with it, since it is aftermarket.

It may just be a clogged drain, disconnected drain hose, or it may be something worse causing your leak. But, if you do infact have a sunroof, especailly an aftermarket sunroof, I can almost promise you that's where the water is getting in.

First thing you need to do is find out of it's factory or not. Post a picture of the sunroof opening if you are unsure.
