My rear end is probably shot too, but I've got 120K on my 97SR5. It's actually rusting thru from the outside! What really makes me mad is that it was at the dealer's last Nov for a coil pak. Since it was in the shop, and I've only ever changed oil, etc, I figured it was time for some maintenance. Told them to do the timing belt, so naturally, I needed a new water pump. Told them to flush the tranny and other basic stuff. Well, they called to tell me that my rear axle seal was leaking. This 4runner has gone through more rear axle seals and brakes than probably every car I've owned in my 48 yrs! If it's had 5 rear seals replaced, it's had 10! Anyway, last couple weeks it's been howling so loud that I was hoping it was either tires or bearings...but to my dismay, the rear diff has no gear oil left in it. I imagine damage has already been done so I'm looking to find another rear axle with hub from a junkyard. Sorry to hijack your thread Toybox, I just had to jump in when I was reading about the brakes...as I've gone through a pile of those too in the 8 years I've owned my 4runner...starting with new calipers when it only had 5K on it!
