Lean after lift question

So i have been doing research on the threads but i have still not found any clarification to this.

I have a 2WD 2014 SR5 without KDSS and i am planning to lift it with either dobinsons or OME shock/struts and springs.

Do i need to be worried about a possible lean after the installation of this setup on my truck even though i don't have KDSS? I am asking this because i have read that some members on here have experienced this problem right after the lift.

I would bet most of those owners, never measured it "BEFORE" the lift and had no clue that it was leaning to begin with. Then after the lift they are just hyper-aware of everything and then they notice it and the OCD sets in.

Go out and measure your's right now and see how far off it is. I bet it's off right now and always has been. That will be your baseline.


Also.......just out of curiosity, why lift a 2WD, Actually why buy a 2WD to begin with?

In response to your question: I live in South Florida and the majority of the 4runners here are 2wd since there is no need for 4wd. Its very rare to find a 4wd unless you specifically purchase a TRD PRO or TRD Off Road. I also bought it used so the $$ factor also played a role.
 
It still looks like a 4Runnner, lift it and enjoy it. You need 285 tires to complete the look.

I think the lean is due to the gas tank on the drivers side. Some have added a small spacer on the left front.

The driver side of my Runner sits 1/2" lower, even with the suspensions adjusted on that side. I'm hoping that a rear bumper with a tire on the passenger side will even it out.

Thanks for the response, That's just interesting to me. Here in Oregon, you would be hard pressed to find a 2WD model. I had no idea they were so popular in some areas. I'm sure they're around in my area, but I don't think I've actually seen one. :thumb:

You probably wouldn't know one if you saw it unless you crawled under it. They look exactly the same, no different badging, no different stance, etc. I'm actually surprised they aren't more common. Tons of people want a large wagon style vehicle but never go off pavement.

The lean is because all the heavy shit - driver, gas tank, battery, etc - is all on that side. KDSS has nothing to do with it. There will be less lean with OEM coils because they are slightly different side to side to compensate for the weight difference. Aftermarket coils are the same side to side, so the lean is more pronounced.

The general solution is to install a small spacer on the driver's side. Typical spacer size is about 10mm. This mostly solves it.
 
Go with adjustable front shocks so you can level it perfectly. Adjusting as pictured got mine dead on level

IIRC the part numbers for left and right shocks are identical for current models, at least for the '16 Trail. Perhaps for the SR5 they actually have different part numbers? I've not seen this documented either way...

Cornfed has a 1inch spacer for the rear driver side and 3/4 for the passenger rear side so I'm guessing that the rear springs ALSO have different rates????

Where would i install this spacer?? on top of the strut??
 
If it doesn't lean now, it won't lean after a lift. You can follow nglayton's suggestion and measure it before doing the lift, but honestly, if you haven't noticed a lean before now, there's no point in borrowing trouble.

NOT True - I have rebuilt 6 FJ40s, 2 4Runners and 2 Tacomas and they all leaned to the driver side after the springs were broken in with weight in the bed.

Toyotas lean - they do.

All 6 of my FJ40's leaned and I needed to compensate for this in the lift.
My last FJ40 lift was:

Sure if you run the rig with no weight in it(no driver?) your assumption might hold true, but I am constantly putting stuff in my big Conferr box. hauling firewood, putting my Tepui RTT on, awning, biking gear, camping gear, hauling my small camper and towing my motorcycles. The tilt is something you get used to and I bought my first 1978 FJ40 in 1986 and it leaned to the driver side. My 2015 TRD Pro leans the same way with weight in it. I also intentionally put more weight on the passenger side to compensate.

I weigh 195 pounds so it is not all me - the truck leans in the driveway without me in it.

The struts are the same, the coils are slightly different.

I'm not 100% on the rear having different rates.
