Leaving Off-Roading - Pricing an ‘05 V8

It looks like I’m pretty much done going off-road due to health issues and relocating. I’ve had a great time and it’s time to look forward to a new stage in life.

Since I’ll be leaving Colorado for Florida I see no need for my truck. I hate mudding. My truck is great, never any trouble, well-maintained, reliable and I really don’t want to sell but it’s not going to be used as it should so away it’ll go.

Those of you that have been though this might be able to help me decide what to do. Sell it as is? Bring it back to stock and sell? It’s got some 235k miles on it so it’s not new, it’s got some bumps and bruises but it’s still in pretty good shape, the interior leather is worn & torn, but it’s 100% rust-free, has a Shrockworks front bumper and winch, custom rear dual swing-out rear bumper, sliders, steelies, 33’s, OME lift, CVJ axles, etc.

Suggestions are welcome!

I hate to see it; but it makes sense. The overall process of going back to stock is harder than it sounds usually. IMO it is easier to sell a well built rig with all the stuff on it than a partially stock rig with a few upgrades that did not sell. The odds are good that someone will want the rig; just settling on a price may be the issue. I would have loved to have found a built rig like that a few years ago when I bought my 3rd gen.

I agree simply sell all together. If you part out you get to deal with copious amounts of degenerates and shady individuals instead of just one. But also I would say if you convert back to stock you are going to get a specific crowd who are going to try and nickel and dime you for everything because you know its old and has so many miles. Keep it as is, and I think you will more likely attract another enthusiast who understands the vehicle and the value of your modifications. Best of luck with the move sir!

I agree with keeping it as-is. There will be more respect for the mods and hard work that you've put into it among the T4R enthusiasts. Particularly, I'd post it on Pirate4x4, T4R, and possibly Yota-Tech. When I was looking for my 3rd gen, I ended up finding one on Yota-Tech and there was a level of trust that the correct maintenance and care had been given to it, that I wouldn't have necessarily had with a non-T4R enthusiast. Plus, the service receipts always help, too.

I do think that modded 4Runners will fetch a much better price in CO / out west rather than out-east. I'm in Atlanta and ended up getting a good 3rd gen 4Runner with 150k, factory e-locker, and 5-speed transmission for $5k. I know out west that number could have been closer to $7-$8k.

What part of Florida are you moving to? Good luck with the move. You're not going to enjoy the humidity...

Seems like Colorado is another high market area, so I would definitely sell first before moving to Florida. Not sure I could make that move. I need access to some mountains.

Thanks folks, I’ll leave it as is and sell it in CO. The move away is not really a choice, I have lung disease and the cold weather and altitude have become my adversaries. Sea level, warmer weather are now my friends. Such is life, we all try to adapt to changes we need to live.

My best wishes on the health front. I can definitely see a move personally for me sometime in my life. I love the PNW, but I already have arthritis in both knees and each winter makes it harder and harder to deal with. Still completely manageable, but I can see a time where I feel like I would just want to be around warmer temps year round to make them (and the rest of my body) feel better.

Hate to be the one to disagree but my experience has been that I've always gotten more money by selling parts off.

If you can find someone wanting to buy it modded then by all means, but I've always found most aren't willing to pay much more for your mods. Also, by being modified you're eliminating a lot of potential buyers that either don't want a modified vehicle or want to mod themselves.

Can also be on how much time and effort you want to take parting things out. You may be able to get more if you part it out, but is it personally worth the time and effort to do so? For some, yes. For others, no.

Why is that so hard to believe? I mean, look at how many people will buy a complete wrecked rig and part it out. Long run they will make up their money and then some.

"in my experience" implies multiple vehicle sales with the characteristics alluded to, meaning selling them in both conditions in order to arrive at the stated conclusion.

I agree with Hepar's point earlier. Its all a matter of how much your time/effort is worth to you to return to stock. Honestly, I wish I pulled and sold the lift off of my 2011 as it made no difference to the trade value.
