LED dome lights long term reports -cumulative

so i am sure that several of us if not most of us have at some point done the LED interior light conversion to some extent. for me i have done pretty much every interior light -dash, climate control, idiot, key, courtesy, dome, map, ect ect ect.... as im sure several other of you have found, while these lights are much brighter and more "pure" light than the incandescent type, the lights burn out rather quickly and are prone to premature failure IMO. so the intent of this thread is to find out from all of us who have done this on our vehicles(other cars work as well) what bulbs have lasted, and been worth the money and what hasnt. right now my dome lights are burnt out again and im tired of playing the buying and replacing game every couple of months. i want something that is gonna last at least a year.

i have found a great set of dash lights that dont leave "hot spots" and give a good life span as well. White Philips Style T10 LED License Plate Tag Light Bulbs Z9 | eBay i have had these for almost 2 years now and love them. recently i had one burn out and so i bought 6 more to replace all of them and have some spares so if an when this ever happens again i have replacements -i also use them in my trans temp gauge.

so lets hear some reports with links to getting other LED bulbs both interior and exterior and the good or bad luck you have had with them.

I purchased several of these for my 3rd gen and my mother's 4th gen in may of last year:

They're still going strong. Had a problem with one of them, but contacted the seller and they replaced it without issue. Don't know much about LED lighting, but these are the COB (chip on board) type - not sure how they're different from others, but I've had very good luck with them so far.

I went with the medium, but they have other sizes in their ebay store.

I bought Cree LEDs for the dome and cargo lamps. Working great so far.

They are 5w from Amazon. Not cheep it was 28 for two replacement lamps.

These ones suck, they're bright, but all the soldered joints break easily, and the adapter that plugs into the dome light falls apart.

Good luck with LED lights, bright and zero burn out issues ( i've had a full LED interior on my last vehicle for 2 years without no issues). However, on these 4runners I would recommend ripping out the housing for the cargo dome light before mounting the light in there... long story short my led light was a bit too long (very very slightly) got the rear seat dome light in without issue, but the rear light somehow sprung up into the metal area above the headliner behind the light housing when I was trying to mount it....and there is no way to get it out! Spend two hours with a hammer, screwdriver and the headliner ripped out trying but eventually gave up...I can hear it rattling around whenever I hit a pothole...

But yeah rip your housing out (it's really easy) to mount your light instead of just sticking it up in there :redbrick:

After reading many threads about LED lights over the years. I 'm not so sure it's worth the cost or issues.
My 98 4 Runner still has the OEM blubs in it almost everywhere. They are dim in comparison but trouble free.

My 5w Cree bulbs are super bright fit in the factory fixtures and been trouble free.

I spent about $10 on ebay for the chip-on-a-board versions around two years ago. Super bright, no issues, and when my kids turn on the dome light during the day and I don't notice that it is on, no issues with a dead or low battery.

Seriously, that alone makes it worth it to me.

I had Ebay 48 SMD LED panels in my FJ front and rear domes, and they lasted the whole time I had the truck (4 years) maybe had one SMD led go out. For my GX, I ordered the whole set from PFransLED, should last a while. I had one manufacturer defect panel, and I emailed PFrans and they sent me three extra panels, awesome customer service.

Same. theres 49 SMD 5050 leds all day for around 5 a pop. just get the ones w/ the festoon adapter and they'll light up your whole interior.

in regards to the 194 bulbs.. superbrightleds have good bright bulbs

I got the kit that a member on here was selling a few years ago. Both dome panels have stayed super bright, but the small ones in the map light just went very dim a few weeks ago. They both did it at the same time, which is weird, but I haven't had time to mess with it yet. I'm still happy I converted; the rear dome changed my life. Also probably saved a battery or two, as I've left a dome light on overnight or longer and the battery stayed more than strong enough to start. An incandescent would have left it dead.

Not when using OEM style replacements, but if you get the ones I linked to in my previous post they will come with the adapters you need to be able to use in any of the three locations:

It might plug in but that won't fit in my '99 or years with the same map light set-up. 1 7/8" is way too long. I think there are years it will fit.

I will have to double check, but I'm pretty sure I bought the med size for all four locations. It's possible I got the small for the map lights, but looking at that sellers store I don't where they have a smaller size listed now.

Sorry, but I'm pretty sure 1 5/8" is still way too long for my map light (with sunroof). I'll figure it out when I troubleshoot my issue but it's very tight and it's a 2x3 in there now.

EDIT: I just went out with a measuring tape. 1 5/8" is almost exactly the width of the hole. I can't say for sure either way if it will fit.

The funny thing is when I was holding the tape to the lens, both map panels flashed back to full brightness. WTF? Obviously a connection issue and not the fault of the LED's.

The only issue with the panel type is that there really isn't a place to stick them to inside the housing. I just let them lay on top of the lenses, seem to work fine.

You'll need to verify this, but I don't think the canbus version will work in our trucks. Pretty sure those will only work in much newer vehicles.
