LED Strip to car alarm...

Hello... I'm new and in need of help and hope that i'm in the right place to ask this question....Ok i have a toyota4runner and i have a clifford remote start and car alarm that i want to add a 9 led strip to i have tried many ways to hook it up but i end with either...not enough power to the led from the oem wire red and blue or i end with the lights satying on all the time... i have it wired to a 12v constent and the ground side going into the ground of the blue wire going into the alarm system....anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

You have it wired to 12v constant. Your alarm probably isn't triggering the led via ground. You're going to have to run a relay. Use the signal wire from the alarm to trigger the relay.

Could you please list all that i would need to do this? i thought this is what i need to do but wanted to ask a pro....thanks

Also when the constent is wired to the led the lights stay on all the time led from my dash is like in sync with the flashing patterns of the led light and they never go off....plus i think when the constent is wired i removed a wire and it was still on when i turn of the car and unwire no lights rewire then i turn on the car i have lights

I'd love to help you but your run on sentences give me a headache. I don't understand what you're asking. Punctuation is your friend.

Learn what a relay does. It has a constant 12v in to a switched 12v out. The switch is triggered by another source (your alarm). I'm not going to over complicate things with negative triggers. I'm assuming your alarm isn't set up that way.

found a relay and ordered it 5 pin 12v on and off switch....thanks for the info..

I'm really not following your post but it sounds like what you are trying to ask is how to hook up the strip LED to the clifford alarm's blinking LED correct this is not possible because the aftermarket alarm's LED is not a 12v trigger and it's not going to be enough juice to power the strip LED which is most likely rated at 12v so what you need to do is leave the blinking LED wires alone and hook the ground of the strip LED to the ground when armed signal of the clifford alarm's brain this would only allow you to turn the strip LED on and off and not make it blink though if you want it to blink you're going to need to buy a strip LED that blinks with a constant power source

Thank you.. this is what i needed to know.. ok that being said.. do you know what wire would be the negative i need to run to the led light? i have a constent just need the remote wire to turn the led on when the alarmed, off when the alarm is not armed or the car is running..

It's really hard to say w/o knowing which exact clifford module you have...but on a lot of aftermarket alarm's I've worked with the "Ground When Armed" wire is the orange one coming off the main harness of the brain. Make sure to verify this with a meter before you start connecting things; it should provide a ground only when armed. Also be careful not to drive too much stuff off of it, they are usually only rated for ~500 mA max. A short LED strip might be okay but if it's a powerful one you're better off using a relay so you don't burn out the alarm's brain.

I work from my phone 90% of the time so im use to it....most people now a days or using there phones to hit the forum seen....thanks again for your help the relay i will try as this is the best bet for what i want to do if nothing else i will just use it without the flash patterns....again to the guy that gave me the idea...again thanks...you might need an advil after this...lol sorry

I have a question unrelated to grammar or wiring -

Is your goal to have an led strip flash when the alarm is armed? For the purpose of detering a potential thief?

Its my experience that the less attention you bring to yourself the better. On a dark street or parking garage if a theif can see that led strip blinking like crazy he's just found his target. He won't think "oh that must be hooked up to an alarm, that isn't worth my time" he will see the red flash, which will force him to see your sweet 4runner which will make him want to get in there anyway.

you need a diode on the ground side of the ground when arm output, usually found on the started kill relay harness. also get the constant + on the ignition side.
i think he is trying to copy the way i have it.

dont use a regular relay, find those micro relay, u will also need to use a diode to trigger it on from the ground. got a pic of the leds?

Nice attitude, lol. You see it's really not about the punctuation and grammar that I care about; it's being able to properly understand what you want help with. If someone reads your question wrong and gives you the wrong advice, who do you blame when you fry something on your truck?
