led wiring help

Iv got a 4 inch blue oznium led strip in my foot wells and under each of the front seats. There all hooked up to a single switch so I can turn them on an off whenever I want. The only problem is I rarely ever use them because they are too bright while driving. I want to wire them so that they all come on when any door is open, kinda like a courtesy light. I got this schematic from J.A. but before I tackle this just wanted some input or other wiring options.

If you want them on while driving and would like to tone them down a bit you could put in a resistor in series with the led to bring down the voltage a bit.

Id rather have them turn on when the doors open. But are you sure that schematic of yours will work. It seems like a lot of wiring. Is there an easier way

It's really not that much wiring at all. It is a dual throw switch with a relay. When the switch is up you will have your lights come on anytime like when dirving. Switch down and they operate with the doors. It is easier than wiring to the dome light as you dont need to run a wire up into the headliner.

You dont really need the fuse between 87 and the switch.

I created the above schematic about 8 years ago, and designed it to use a relay with incandescent lights which draw more wattage than modern leds. If you want a little simpler method, try my updated schematic shown below that I used on my 2007 and perhaps you can use adapt that to your 3rd Gen.

Thats a great write up J.A. I really want to do this. Do you happen to know what two wires I would need to tap into on my 3rd gen runner. The ILE and the dome relay

Looks like you have a 1996-1998, correct? If so I would suggest to tap into the positive and negative side of the "IGNITION KEY CYLINDER LIGHT", which is essentially what I did on the 07 but not directly at the cylinder light itself.

Positive - Blue with black stripe
Negative - Blue with Yellow stripe

i have kinda the same but mine are hid under the dash for front and under the back of the front seats for the back, they are all 4 aimed down and have lots of light to see but i turn them off if its really dark bc i can only see blue in all my windows
