LEDs not the right fit?

So i have recently been replacing my interior lights, gauge cluster and air controls with LEDs. For most things i was able to use 74s. I have done the research and it sounds like most people are putting 3 194 LEDs in for the gauges. However, the 194s seem too big to fit in my cluster. Am i putting the wrong ones in? Should i be running 24s?
