The fact that the 4.6L V8/6 speed auto might not increase gas mileage is true but how much would it decrease it by.About 1 mpg difference real world as a good friend I work with HAS the 4.6L/6sp in his 2010 Tundra 4X4. He gets better gas mileage then me(he gets 18.5 to my 17.5 avg.) although he has stock tires and I have AT tires and drive aggressively.I don't think putting the 4.6 and a 6-speed tranny in the 4Runner would increase the mileage over the V6 and 5-speed. In fact, I expect it would decrease. The V6 is already a pretty sophisticated engine, and a different transmission would provide only marginal improvement.
The 4.6L is a dual VVT-i aluminum block/aluminum heads engine just like the 4.0l V6 and it's rated a ULEV II green engine.Basically the same engine with 2 extra cylinders. But it has 310HP and more importantly 327ft/lbs of torque at 3400 rpm.
