I've been following this thread and when I checked my email just now, I had an email from Harbor Freight and the subject said "Impressive Quality at an Incredible Price - Car Craft Magazine". I've never heard of that magazine, but I looked anyway.



Anyway, just thought it was interesting...

thats the box i have, top and bottom. look at the top of page 2

and it's full. the black craftsman standup is empty and i'm trying to sell it. the red matco doesn't belong to me. since this pic was taken the red one is gone and the yellow box has been moved into the corner where the black one is.

Wow, I am surprised how many guys have high end boxes considering how expensive they are. It's pretty much home depot stuff for me (2 full height 9-drawers). I have picked most of them up on sale, making them cheaper than most, but they are all full now, and I still have some tools left over. This is about as much as my little half of a garage can handle though.

Also shown are my motorcycle (the red one, highly modified XJ600), my roommate's bike, and some of my other tools.

The other half of the garage belongs to the lady downstairs (2-family house), she makes a mess of my half too, and is a general pain in the ass.

Planning a winter of motorcycle engine maintenance.

I just picked up the Blue Point roller cart for $60 the other weekend, and the Husky cabinet on the bottom is also relatively new and was free. The Snap-On boxes are certainly nice, but I can't see myself ever spending anything over a couple hundred for a box that's sole purpose is to hold my tools lol.

I wouldn't trade a good cabinet with good sliders for on of the HF ones. I really like the fact that one of my husky's has a little cam lock when the drawer is fully extended, and the sliders on all of them are pretty smooth. I have looked at the HF ones and they are not as smooth, so I can' see them not working so great after a while.

Plus I don't think HF is particularly cheap for the cabinets, they are pretty similarly priced for other brands, like husky when it's on sale, or other ones on amazon.

Aw come on, there are some brands with quality between harbor freight and snap-on.

I don't know exactly how they stack up against the harbor freight ones, but HD has a bunch of husky cabinets around the 41-56in range for less than $370. I have been pretty happy with my HD cabinets, though the one chest I have that is their "premium" sliders is much better.

there 46" only has 9 drawers for $239. i need at least 11 like i have, as the drawers are packed, especially the bottom. the 52 also has 9 drawers, for 329. they have the international box in 42, in blue, for 595! lowes doesn't have anything of interest either. so far, it looks like HF. unless, like i said, a nice snap on or matco comes around.

The Harbor Freight piece is nice; I am considering getting it to replace the Task Force non bearing using tool boxes I have currently. I think the sale runs through the end of March. If I get it, I will post some pics.

As Nelson postulates, the nice Husky chests are a real treat. My local HDs just have the basic ones.

My uncle has a Matco tool chest for he was a facility manager at a chemical plant for ten years. The SO, Matcos, etc. are nice to have IMO but don't warrant ownership unless one wrenches or works in an industrial environment for a living.

I'm sensing a theme here, guys who like the #4 in their rides!! I've had 2 944s and I'm on the look-out for my 3rd.

Here's my box. Definitely inadequate but a good first step, especially since it was on sale at Home Depot for $100!
