Check out this video I posted in a separate thread, it shows it well. How far it sticks forward depends on how you set it up. Where I have mine site now is close to as far Back as it can go without hitting the lift gate.

 
Nice video, Sleeter! You really killed it with that response to my question. Kind of made me want to get a drone!

Looks like the 2500cm awning fits on there very nicely. That's the size I think I'll get, too.

Did you ever find a way to attach the awning to your stock rails? I am about to buy a Foxwing awning and need to find out how I can attach it without also buying an aftermarket roof rack.... Yikes! Need opinions.
 
Whatever awning you go with, you have to use the word "Deploy" several times while talking about awnings. It's a requirement. :pimp:

it would have been really sweet if toyota put a real roof rack on the 4runner...
like they did on the FJ...
I kept my ARB 2500 awning when I sold the fj...now to determine how i will mount it on the 4runner...
I had it on the passenger side of the fj...

what's the general consensus here....driver or passenger side?

Went the factory rail/Yakima cross bar combination to put my ARB awning on. Made some mounts to attach the awning to the end of the Yakima round bars. Turned out great and I can hang the awning "up" or flip the bracket and hang it lower against the truck. I was looking at LabRak Yakima mounts and others but did not want to spend $100+ for mounts. All in, I spend $16 for my mounts, using quality hardware (and an evening of my time) and I can mount other things to the Yakima rack.

Really like your setup. Just ordered a Yakima rack setup just like that. Looking for an awning. How did you mount that awning to the crossbars? Also what awning is that?

I have the ARB 2000 awning. I made up an internal compression mount that inserts inside the Yakima round bar and when tightened down serves as as solid attachment point for the awning. I used a single 12" heavy duty metal mending plate (cut in half) for the bracket. I used a grinder to radius the end to approximately match the Yakima round bar. I have attached a picture of the compression mount. Knowing the internal diameter of the Yakima round bar is approximately 7/8" I went to the hardware store. Got 3in 5/16th stainless bolts (full thread), rubber stopper (forgot size but small end is 7/8"), T-nut (goes in end of stopper and is for 5/16ths bolt). Drill hole in the rubber stopper, insert T-nut into hole, run bolt through and put a stack of 7/8" washers (for anit-wobble) on the end and add a lock nut. The rubber stopper will be bigger than the Yakima bar opening so you need a grinding wheel to take it down in size (and a little off the T-nut). I just had the bar next to me and would grind, fit, grind, fit until it just slid into the bar. Finally place into the bar and tighten down, leaving about 3/4" of bolt sticking out of the bar. The T-nut squeezes against the washers and balloons out the rubber stopper creating a tight compression fit and makes a very secure mount. Use the piece of mending plate to mount the awning to the rest of the exposed 5/16 bolt. It makes for a clean mount and it is all available at your local hardware store. Just go to the bolt section and hunt and then ask for mending plates, you will know the right one when you see the one that is 12" and has hole spacing that exactly matches the spacing of the awning channels. I got the idea from a YouTube video, so if you need any further detail search over there. One thing I did different was to compress the fitting while leaving some exposed thread, effectively creating a mounting bolt. Original video used the bolt that mounts the awning up to also do the compression of the stopper against the T-nut. That may be safer as you only have one bolt that could loosen but with lock nuts and thread locker my way is not a problem and you can expose as much bolt as you need, while having the compression fitting deeper in the bar. If you go the other way you might want a 2.5" bolt. Hope this make sense.

i put this together for a buddy of mine. I was thinking about doing something for the back of the 4runner. I know they have tents that attach but i want shade not a tent sarting the wheels turning
