RCI sliders with bump

I specifically bought my 5th gen w/out KDSS so sliders would be easier to place with more anchors.

I slid sideways and hit a tree and was able to crawl out. The bump pushed the tree out of the way and I had scant to no scratches due to the bump. Highly recommend them, also make reaching the roof rack easier. Best of luck.

As always it depends on exactly why you want sliders. Sounds like the main reasons are how they look and for the wife to use them as steps. If so, your choices are narrowed down to what look YOU like and what's the most functional step wise.

Sliders exist mostly to use off road to protect the truck. In that regard, bump outs are absolutely not gimmicky because they work exactly as designed.

I've got Budbuilt with bump outs and open only because of functionality. My kid was young when I got them and others commented that plates would be better for her to use as a step. Maybe so but it took her all of 3 seconds to learn where to put her small cute but smelly feet. I also use them as steps not only to get to the roof but also to get in. Many others would have worked better for that job but that's not why I got sliders.

So, what's the real criteria? Form or function? Aesthetics or performance? Only after that is honestly considered can answers follow.

Well obviously I'd like them to be aesthetically pleasing, why would I want to detract from the looks of the vehicle when there are so many options available?!

More so than anything I need them to be a step both for my other half (she's 5'4") and to gain easier access to the roof rack and I need them to provide protection to the rocker panel when off-road and the doors when in parking lots.

Running boards look nice, work great as steps and will also defend against run away shopping carts.

I have these trail edition Metal Tech sliders. I don't have anything to compare them to, but I've been really happy with them. Not only a jack point, but the entire truck can be lifted by them with a forklift (they did it in-house at Metal Tech). Pretty crazy for bolt-ons. I put some skater's tape on the back for traction for the kids.

It's apparent that you're part of the sarcastic and passively aggressive crew here. If I wanted factory steps I would have kept the $hit nerf bars that came on it and that I removed because they provide no protection "off-road" but some how you keep missing that part. I want them to protect the vehicle both underneath and on the sides as well as provide a good step for the misses to get in and for myself to gain easy access to the roof rack.

My thread was started to weed out the options that are weaker/inferior in design, more problematic in mounting/install, or less than stellar customer service. There is no way for me to know which slider(s) might stand out from the rest of the crowd if I don't currently own any or without purchasing numerous models for T&E. I wasn't asking which were more appealing to the average consumer as that's obviously subjective.

FWIW, since everyone is throwing in a bit of advice, I'd also recommend going with a reputable shop that is local (if/when that is an option). I'll be ordering my sliders in the very near future from Mobtown Offroad for the same reasons (not only supporting a local shop but also no shipping costs).

Also, while I feel it's quite a bit of personal preference, after discussions with Joe @ Mobtown I'll be going with no kickout and no top plates. :dancin:

You asked for thoughts but when you get them you get annoyed and insulting. Never mind that we already have a decent Consolidated Slider Thread on this topic.

Bottom line is that you have conflicting requirements. For ‘off road’ you want open HD tubing and with a bump out – others have already told you why. However they won’t work best as a step. My guess is that your main requirements are a step for the wife and looks ‘cool’ for you.

My main requirement was for “off road” which is why sliders were invented. My then much shorter than 5’ 4” daughter needed to adapt even though tread plates would have served her much better. And if I never went ‘off road’ I would never had installed sliders. On my F250 I installed AMP Research PowerStep Running Boards because we needed steps and have them out of the way when plowing. On my car I have nothing. All three vehicles also visit parking lots and while only one has protection all seem to survive without drama.
