I doubt this will go anywhere as most 5th gen owners don't seem to care about much below the surface until something goes wrong....but I figure it is worth a try.
There was a previous discussion about Octane and how it affects the performance and potentially longevity of the 1grfe.

A few people seemed interested in the topic and went out and tried a few things with interesting results.
I would like to turn this into data and a useful resource vs opinion.. and it is not that hard.
Here is what can be done.
Spend $20 and get a cable compatible with TIS. Go to Amazon and search for "mini VCI". This should be a required tool for anyone planning to maintain their own 5th gen.
The only tricky thing about installing the software is that it is not compatible with antivirus... so you really need to isolate in a VM. I created a post with an install guide a while back.

Next step is logging some data. I also created a post asking for help with data and explaining how to record logs with TIS.

To better understand the timing maps under different octane... we need logs of the following parameters.
Vehicle Load
Knock Correct Learn Value
Knock Feedback Value
IGN Advance
Engine Speed
I list just 5 here, because I have found that TIS seems to use a frame strategy of 5 parameters per frame, so you still get 4.5Hz with 5, but it drops to 1.8 with 6... The post above explains how to create data list and record logs.
Anyway, I'm going to start collecting this data on the FJ (my 5th gen tune is too different to count). And I'm hoping others will help as the FJ is really a different motor. I need as many log segments as you can get and what octane is in the truck and how long it has been in there.....
I understand hardly anyone has time for this or really cares. But I figure it is worth a try and could be educational for everyone even if it takes months to collect enough samples to come to any conclusions.
If you get logs.. PM me and I'll figure out a way for you to get them to me. I'll then consolidate and create some pivot tables...
I'll probably have to come up with some strategy to drop data during a shift... I've notice tq management totally kills advance on shifts, but I have not been able to find a parameter that shows it as a factor.
