Licence Plate light ON

Hello

My licence plate lights on my 1999 Toyota 4runner limited are always ON. Even when the keys are not in the ignition.
The only time the lights come OFF is when i open the back door.

Any advise?

Electrical confounds me...
Sometimes the wires that run from the body to the door crack and break at the bend. Usually that means things won't work but since change occurs when you open and close the door look there to start? Easy enough to pull the boot up and take a peek.

Same thing happened to my old 4runner. Wires had broken inside the boot.

License plate light turns off when lights are turned on

My license plate lights on my 1997 Toyota four Runner turn off when I turn my lights on. And turn on when I turn my lights off. I’ve checked the boot and There’s no broken wires could be in the back hatch panel? Or the wires that run to the lights themselves?
