license plate issues

so... time comes to change the license plates....no biggie right? had the 4runner for a year, never noticed the bolts holding the rear license plate are completely rusted and stripped.... got one out relatively easy with the easy out, started on the other, head broke off.... started again on the shaft, side broke out. couldnt get the thing to budge. cross threaded? is my best option drilling it out and retapping it? any suggestions? thanks.

Same thing happened to me when I bought my T4R. I removed the inside tailgate cover. Then removed the inside panel covering all the window hardware, not a task that's easy, but with patience to figure out the process, you can finally get to the back of what is left of the bolt and thread it the rest of the way through to the inside. Tip: don't put it back together until you've matched the good bolt and have reinstalled both of them. Don't muscle them on there when you do. Consider using either stainless steel bolts or at least anti-seize if you don't. Maybe both...
 
yeah, Ive got stainless hex heads for replacements.... but gotta get the old one out first. thanks for the tip, will look into it tomorrow
 
Ha, very common issue actually. Even worse were those stupid ass plastic screws Toyota use to use on them. Drilling and retapping has always been easy enough for me.
 
License plate screws corroded, broken off

What a PITA!

Just finished dealing with this today. First, I tried an 'EASY OUT'. Didn't work. If you have a broken off screw, some lessons I learned the hard way regarding 'EASY OUTS':

1. 'Easy outs' aren't so easy. I have never had much success with them. The smaller ones can even break off in place. If that happens, you are f%#4ed. They are so hard, you will never be able to drill it out to try again.

2. The license plate screw broke because it was welded in place with rust. An 'easy out' has little chance of duplicating the turning power of the original rusty bolt (before it broke). If it can't generate 2-3X the torque, it has no chance of getting the broken piece out.

3. The 'Easy out' pilot hole has to be PERFECTLY centered to have any chance of success. Drilling a hole dead center in an uneven, hardened fastener, even after prick punching it is nearly impossible. If you don't you can't use the correct size 'easy out' and may end up locking the tool against the threads in the hatchback panel. Do you have cobalt bits? You'll need them to try this losing strategy...

Wish I had read this thread before beginning this project. Based on today's experience this is my SUGGESTED APPROACH TO THIS PROBLEM:

4. DO NOT DRILL OUT UNTIL YOU TRY REMOVING IT FROM INSIDE THE DOOR. (great suggestion from another member. thx) Drilling it out first may weaken the bolt to the point where when you grab it from inside the door with a pair of vice-grips, it will twist and break off on that side too. THIS HAPPENED TO ME.

5. Pray it's only the left hand fastener that breaks. Not sure you could even get a vice grip onto the back of the right hand one without disassembling the window lift. OMG.

So, by this point mine was broken from both ends. I ended up having to just keep drilling, best I could, until I could grab a thread with a needle nose plier and peel out what was left (looked like a wire when I was done). The factory threads by this time were completely destroyed.

***If you like SAE Standard fasteners, you can use a 1/4-28 tap directly into the existing hole and re-thread it. I did this to the bad thread as well as the working thread. :)***

ABOUT GALVANIC CORROSION

The bolts rot out badly because of the difference between the electric potentials of dissimilar metals. Aluminum + steel = badly corroded steel. Steel and stainless steel are not a problem together. HOWEVER, stainless steel and aluminum are. Stainless + aluminum = corroded aluminum. I have two corroded license plates to prove it.

MY PLAN. Because I'd rather have a license plate corrode than go through another broken bolt removal from my hatch, I will use stainless steel. At the same time, I will try to buy a plastic washer at HD to put under the head, to keep the aluminum license plate from having electrical continuity with the SS fasteners. To keep the fasteners from backing out, I will use Loc-tite 242 (Blue) on the threads. First clean with carb cleaner. You get the added bonus of protecting the threads from future corrosion, too.

Wow this happened to me yesterday. A good 2 hours and got it all back and set with new screws in.
 
I have the exact same problem. Both heads snapped right off. I may try getting them from the door panel because I have never had any luck with the easy outs either.

For now my plate is held up by zip ties with gorilla tape on the back of the plate.
 
I always use stainless steel bolts in my 3rd gens license so they dont fuse rot together.

The tailgates can rust up as well and I could see the bolts and nuts along with some rust dust panel come out when trying to replace a plate. I guess some autobody work maybe required at times.

They broke off in my rusty crusty hatch. Rear plate is currently dangling from zip ties hooked to the plastic.

I had this issue on my 2015 when I bought it; used the tap and die for one of the holes and a stainless steel bolts for the other… We will see how it comes out
 
Thanks to reading this thread I was able to avoid some of the hassles other suffered.

I had to soak the right one repeatedly with CRC Freeze-Off for about 5 days:
Since I'm replacing ancient plates I bent the old plate's edge back with a hook to create a little well which I could dump the freeze-off down (put a paper towel behind the plate across the bottom to catch excess). With each application, I would open the door and leave it up so the freeze-off would soak DOWN into the screw. I'd leave it like that for a few hours, then do it again, leaving the door open most of the day. I started last Saturday and finally yesterday (Thursday) the screw came loose with minimal effort.

The threads inside toward the front of the car look like fresh metal. I will install these stainless screws with the the overkill solution of adding anti-seize to them when I do:

Nice. I currently have nylon bolts here. Seems fine.

EDIT: While nylon is rust proof, it is not UV proof. So I guess eventually these nylon fasteners will degrade to the point of failure from exposure to the elements..

license plate steel rusty nuts inside hatch

Hello, this is my 1st post here. I have searched and read about the rusty license plate bolts, but even if I replace them with stainless, they thread into rusty square steel nuts that are spot welded to the inside of the rear hatch. The rust will just continue to get worse.

Has anyone tried to: 1-remove these steel nuts, 2-clean the rust, replace with stainless nuts (JB weld?), and reseal the area to prevent rust?

I can't imagine it to be impossible, however what I would do if you're worried about rust is drill out the threads and put in a stainless rivnut and use those instead
 
I done all the above. What I mostly do is just clean the threads with a tap and use stainless bolts with antiseize on them. If the threads are too far gone. I will retap the next size up and use stainless with antiseize. If you don't have antiseize use multi purpose grease. :)

I had to drill out and retap the broken bolts. It’s near the beginning of my build and repair thread.

I used stainless Allen heads.

You should look at the Phillips screws that hold your license plate illumination lights.
