Lift kit + bigger tires HELP

I'm seriously confused by all of this stuff. This summer I'm planning on doing a 3" lift for my 2005 4runner SR5.

I want to do a coilover lift for extra travel. This is also my daily driver so it has to be comfortable.

  • I was planning on doing Bilstein 5100's front and rear + ??? I have no idea which coils to get, and if anything else is needed for them.
1a. Can anybody recommend any coils to purchase for this lift?
1b. Is there anything else that needs to be done to the 4runner? I heard it will need an extended brake line, and diff drop doesn't need to happen unless you are going above 3"

  • I was also thinking about upgrading my 31" tires to 33" tires. Something like general grabbers or any other recommended option.
2a. would I need to regear at all?
2b. right now i have 265/70R16 tires (31") how can i tell which 33" imperial tire will fit on my wheel? I saw there was something like 33.5x12.5 and 33x10 or something like that, but I don't understand it.

Hi There Insaniak,

I see that you are new to the forum - welcome:yo:

You will find a lot of valuable information here for your rig. Take some time to scroll through the various stickies under the 4th gen section and soak up as much information as you can. Also, the search function works very well. The forum has been around for quite some time and most of your questions can be answered immediately via a past posting.

Now on to your questions...

1a. The Bilstein 5100's are an excellent choice in shock if you are looking for a mild upgrade to your suspension. The front shock is adjustable and can be used to lift your rig .85, 1.75 or 2.5 inches. Many of the forum members pair them with Old Man Emu lift springs - either the 884's if you have the V6 and do not plan on adding a steel bumber in the future, or the 885's if you have the V8 and/or plan to add a steel bumper.

You can also purchase Bilstein 5100's for the rear and a popular choice in rear lift springs is Toytec's Superflex. The Superflex is 10% stiffer than stock and should give you about 1.5 inches of lift.

1b. It will not be necessary to purchase extended brake lines if you only plan on a mild lift.

For tires, I highly recommend the Nitto Terra Grapplers, but the Grabbers are another excellent choice. I personally run Terra Grapplers in the size 285/70/17 and they measure about 32.6" when they are new. In my opinion this is the perfect size for the 4Runner. Once you have the lift installed, and tires on, you will notice some minor rubbing against the wheel liners and possibly the body mount. The wheel liners are easy to trim, just use the search function to learn more.

2a. It is not necessary to regear after upgrading to a 33" tire. I have the V6 and only noticed a small loss in power after switching to the larger tires. It's really not an issue at all.

2b. The 285's I mentioned above fit fine on the stock 17x7 SR5 rim. I wouldn't go any wider on the stock rim.

Good luck with your build! I see that you live in Utah. I just got back from spending a week there and it is an absoulutely perfect landscape for wheeling and caming. Have fun!

Check out the sticky on the subject. TONS of good info. Good luck!
