lifted v6 or lifted v8

I'm looking at buying a used 4runner 06-09 in the next few weeks. I have found decent deals on both the v6 and v8's with mileage around 50k. I would like to know which one will drive better with a lift. I'm thinking ome 3inch. Also which one will have better mpg's once they are lifted? I think that the v8 will handle the lift and tires better but I could be wrong. I don't want to start a v6 vs v8 war. Just want to hear from someone who has any real world info from their rigs.

If you are concerned about mileage, then get a V6 and don't lift it. If you are going to lift it and add large heavy tires, then I would get the V8 and accept that the rig will have awful mileage.
 
I have a V6 and lift/tires. IMO the V8 is unnecessary unless you plan to tow significant loads with it. I haul our Mastercraft ski boat behind my V6 with no issue, and have never felt under-powered doing that or in an offroad situation. You will get better gas mileage with the V6, regardless of if you lift it and put on meaty tires. Good luck in your decisions, hope this helps a bit.
 
I have a V6 and it has plenty of pep to its. It's a very strong motor.

I get 21 mpg on my v6 and many people get 15-17mpg in their V8's.
 
I tow my 3500lbs loaded pop up all over the place with more than enough power for me doing 100kmh on the highway is no prob. I think the V6 has more than enough power to run a lift and tires.

Yeah, 15-17 once they lift them but I got 21 before I lifted my v8. OP, have you driven the 4.7? Drive both and make your decision, it will be an easy one!
 
IMO, gas mileage difference between the two engines is negligible, especially after a lift and tires. (I have a lifted V6 with heavy 6-ply tires and get 15-17 mpgs.)

Get a V8 while you still can, and while gas prices are below $5/gal.

thanks everyone for the quick replies. I have not driven the v8 yet but I have driven the 6. I am coming from a jeep wrangler so it was way quicker then that. I tow a 2 place snowmobile trailer on the weekends about 30 miles one way. I am thinking the v8 with a lift and tires would handle that better. I know either will get bad mileage with a lift and tires. I think I need to try the v8 out now! Don't want to buy something then wish I got the other one.
 
V6 is plenty. Only reason to get the V8 is if you really want one.. I would love a V8 but am very glad I went with the V6.
 
Hopefully soon I will be pulling the trigger on the v8 if its still available. I need to sell my wrangler first. Not going to trade it in and take it up the tailpipe.
 
My advice? Get the V8. That was the whole reason I went 4runner when I bought it new. I wanted a mid-size suv with V8 and the 4runner and cherokee were the only 2 available.... Plus the V8 is full time 4wd, the V6 is not. Tow rating is 7,300 pounds too. MPG is only 1-2 different. Oil filter is in a worse place than V6, need to pull skid plate to remove it. Do have to do a timing belt change @90k?, but I'm only at 30k miles in 4 years so far...

You won't find many V8 owners wishing they went with a V6. The only V6 voters....drive the V6.

Window sticker EPA milage was 14/17. Guess what, with my lift, tires, K&N intake and magnaflow exhaust- I get 14/16 and that's with a corrected speedometer/tripmeter and hand calculating mpg, not just going off the incorrect readout in the dash. Not too bad.

I'm getting right around 19mpg with mine, but I'm at 6500' in elevation so I use less fuel than someone at sea level. It also means that I have less power than someone at sea level, but the V6 is still plenty for me and I love it. That V8 is pretty sweet though!

Go figure...its mainly I drive "X" so I recommend "X" lol :dizzy:

With that said, I have a V6 with a lift and 33" MT (58lbs) and don't regret getting the V6. I can still get around 17.5-18 MPG with mixed driving. However, I have since moved to the other side of town and now have to drive up/down a large hill on my way to work so my current mileage is down to around 16-17.
 
I have an 08 v6 with a 3/2 toytech lift and 285/70/r17 BFG A/T's and I get about 16mpg mixed driving, highway & city but if I baby it I can get 17-20mpg
( this is going by the dash display )

I would guess that your dash display and odometer are inaccurate due to the larger tires... mine's off a little bit with the 265/70's and I've been researching the speedo-healer to fix that. Your mileage might be a little better than you think.
